I must have missed a message since I just read the message re surnames in Maryland. If this researcher is looking for John Parkinson line, they were in New Jersey I believe before coming to Muskingum. I am descended from John Parkinson and Mary Slack. Margaret Calvin.
I am sorry to say that none of the following names appear in the list of Genealogies and Family Histories that are on file in the libraries of Allegany & Garrett Counties. CLYMER GORRELL SILBAUGH COX ROBISON/ROBINSON FERRELL/FARRELL PARKISON/PARKINSON DOWLER NORTH CRABTREE DEW SPIKERS BAIL/BAILE/BAILS BARCUS/BOYLES WAGGONER/WAGONERS ENGLEHART SCHMIDT MARQUIS/MARCUS CULLER FARRINGTON DERRY/DERY/DERRIE/DARY/DARRY/DAIRY In case someone might want to contact the libraries in these counties: Allegany County Library 31 Washington Street Cumberland, MD 21502 Ruth Enlow Library of Garrett County 6 North Second Street Oakland, MD 21550 Jerry Dittman Boonsboro, MD
I have a list of GENEALOGIES and FAMILY HISTORIES that are in various libraries in Allegany and Garrett Counties in Maryland. There are about 100 surnames, excluding spelling variations, listed. These are their holding as of 1977. These are from the book: Western Maryland Materials in Allegany and Garrett County Libraries By: Douglas O. Michaels Pub by: Allegany County Local History Programs Cumberland, MD 1977 I will check the list for any requested surnames. Send request direct to me at <DittDad@aol.com> Make subject line <Alleghany & Garrett County Genealogies> I will post all replies to the list. I delete unwanted mail before opening using the subject line and any request with a subject line other than above will be deleted and no request through the list will be honored. Hi Sorry I have no information to pass on to you but thought that you could possibly help me. My ancestor John Brandon m. Betsy Gordon (Elizabeth) in 1823 in Fairfield Co. and I would love to know who her parents are, even a clue would be great. Joanne S.F., CA
Charles L. GORDON, b 6 Dec 1817, married Clarissa C. VANDENBURGH on 22 April 1841 in Perry Co. Two children were born before Clarissa died on 8 Sept 1849, Daniel L. GORDON and Clarissa C. GORDON, who later married John A. WINDLE. Any information on this family, especially descendents, would be so appreciated. Sandy
Vest this may help -- Joseph BURGESS Born: July 20, 1830. Died: Jan 18, 1924. Married Matilda COLEMAN. She was born: April 27, 1835 in Clayton Township, Perry County, Ohio, on her father's farm. She died: November 19, 1887 in Hopewell Township, on their farm on Jonathan Creek. They are both buried in the old part (Many Brethren) of Mt. Perry Cemetery. Marriage Book 2-3 p. 379 #955, April, 25, 1857. Byself. Married 5 May 1857 by James Mitchell M.G. And Hopewell and Madison County Cemeteries 1989 by OGS chapter of Perry County. And court records. Joseph Burgess is listed in the 1896 petition to partition Henry Bowser's farm - Matilida is dead. Matilda was the daughter of Nancy Horn Coleman Bowser. Since matilda was a step-daughter of Henry Bowser Joseph was apparently considered a possible legal heir - although I am not sure why. Henry's line of Bowsers is the main line in the family history, Anna Maude Bowser. Henry was a sheep farmer and a millionaire by today's standards. He was my wife's great-great-grandfather. Joseph Burgess's property is on the south bank of Jonathan Creek and the Bowser property was on the north bank - in Hopewell Township, Perry County, Ohio. Many neighbor families had been for several generations members of the Jonathan Creek Brethren congregation. They had met in a church building on the site of what is now Mt. Perry Cemetery. There are several Burgess families buried there but except for two of their young sons there is no grave listed for death earlier than Matilda's. As pointed out by Carole there are few surviving stones before 1850. Henry and William Bowser, young sons, of the above, died about that time and their stones were down and overgrown. Today I believe there is more of an effort to keep the cemetery in good order. Vesta - please tell us anything you know about the religion of your Burgess line. We have found religion and politics to be very helpful in better understanding our ancestors. Matilida's Coleman ancestors were Methodist but Nancy Horn was from a well known Brethren family - and we wonder if she joined her Methodist husband. We know she was a most interesting, strong, independent woman of her time. And as a widow she married a Brethren. Were her Coleman children Brethren? We may never know - unless someone like you can help us out. When you reply - please do so on this Perry County list. I am also posting this on the Brethren list because they have an interest in this little known but important Brethren congregation. Regards Hal

Vesta, I find your 3rd Gr. Grandfather Joseph Burgess, age 66, in Madison Twp in 1850. He would possibly have been buried in that Twp. I do not have an Index for Cemeteries in Madison. But you may consider writing the Perry County Gen Society & have them check their records for Madison, if no one else can help you. Many headstones of that vintage, if their was one, would have seen much erosion by the time they were read by the Gen Society so you may not have success. But keep trying. Carole
I would like any information on Joseph Burgess. born 8-4-1783 in Md. Died 11-19-1858. in Perry co. Ohio.I would like to know where he is burried . and if there is any pictures...tks for any help..Joseph was my Great Great Great agrandfather Vesta Venita Colley
Hello Hal, Sure I would be interested in posting the two family histories you have written! Thank you for wanting to contribute them to the site! I don't think anyone's research is perfect and most I have seen do have gaps in them (mine included)! Some of the lines I have been researching I often compare to Swiss cheese...full of holes! But many times its those holes in your research that others can pick up on and generally provide some good leads, at least in my experience. But yes, I'd be happy to post the information. I know many people don't have webpages and don't have the time for it so that is why I do post family information. Makes it easier on people to be able to tell a cousin or another researcher a web address where your information can be found rather than typing it all in an email or printing out the file numerous times and mailing it. I will send you a separate email with my mailing address shortly. Thanks Hal! Yes, I will be working on the 1820-1840 census' probably towards the end of the summer. I've still got quite a bit to finish up and since we are moving in May I figure it will be a while before I start on those. But that is my intention anyway! Actually I have lots of things in "the works" but those will be announced at a later date. Always something brewing in my head!! So yes, eventually those will make it online! Glad you are enjoying the 'new' site! I've still got quite a bit to put back online as well as new info to add, so I'm working on it! And thanks everyone for the great comments! Without so many wonderful volunteers the site wouldn't be half of what it is! Have a good day!
