    3. Those of us who have gotten the virus are not playing games, we are not sending the virus on to everybody on purpose. Once your computer picks the bug up it sends mail with attachments to all of your unopened mail. I am sorry if any of you opened one up from me. I got mine through an attachment from a girl in Ohio that I was used to receiving attachments from . I guess we need to learn the lesson that if we are going to send an attachment to someone, we need to let them know ahead of time, and if we do not get a letter that an attachment is coming do not open it! 3. I suggest if you get an initial answer to a query with an attachment, do not open it. Alternately, before opening messages from an unknown source that includes an attachment, check the properties. Did it come through Rootsweb? As I understand Rootsweb will NOT relay any messages with attachments. Someone please correct me if I am wrong. (Tim Fisher, you should be able to enlighten on this question.) Last week I posted a message saying, as a subscriber I had never been sent an OH-PERRY message with an attachment. Later that day I received a message that had (OH-PERRY) in the Subject line & an attachment included. It was sent by a David Smith, I deleted it so don't have his address. When I checked, PROPERTIES, I found it did not come through Rootsweb. My reply to Mr. Smith was, in effect, he could keep his attachment I was not going to open it. Someone is playing games! be cautious. Carole Williams

    1. Re: [OHPerry] Virus - Enough Said *Sorry but I must ask a question
    2. I don't know enough about this to talk about it but please let me share this & maybe get some help. I placed a question on this board & some time later received a couple of responses stating in the Subject that it was in re to my line I was asking about. Excited I hit download & then tried to open it. Under file name it listed - CARD under Save as type - PIF files. It said" file data corrupt, probably due to bad data transmission or bad disc." I don't know if I didn't properly download , if it was a virus, or if I wasn't computer smart enough . I did have reservations about this as it said- Me_nude.AVI. Subject RE: OH. Perry CO. Surname Search . Dated 5-2-01 4:33 p.m. 1st. Boot. It was from graystone@comteck.com (Paul Thomas). It appeared ok to me. Do you know if this could be a regular on OHPERRY-L ? I certainly hope so as I am in need of help on my John Brown line?

    3. I'm hoping to make a trip to Perry County this week or next to do some research. I seem to recall that a major records repository is closed on Fridays. What else do I need to know? Is there anywhere in the county for overnight lodging? I'll be searching for records on the BAIRD family. Miriam

    1. Re: [OHPerry] Mc donald-Carroll
    2. Hi Delana, I am very interested in your John McDonald. I have a John McDonald that came from PA to Jackson County between 1850 and 1860. He had a son named John, born about 1829 in PA and also married there. He did not come to Ohio with his father and siblings. He came earlier (date unknown) with his wife and children to Perry or Hocking County. The other siblings settled in Jackson and Vinton Counties, and later part of the family went to Ross, Highland, Fayette, and Franklin Counties, and one went to Michigan. I have the names of his siblings if you think they may be connected to your McDonald family. Thank you, Harold McDonald Cantonment, Florida

    3. All this talk about the virus has me curious. I get the OHPERRY rootsweb mailings & not one has come through to me with an attachment. In fact I was told Rootsweb would not accept attachments. It seems to me that the virus is being carried through some other medium than Rootsweb. Carole Williams

    3. YOU DO HAVE THE VIRUS!!!! If you attempted to open the attachment you got the virus whether something opened up or not. It doesn't always kick in until you reboot your computer. Run the fix from http://bootheel.tucows.com/files4/fixmtx.exe right away and DO NOT SHUT OFF YOUR COMPUTER until the fix has been done. ----- Original Message ----- From: <Hoffman793@aol.com> To: <OHPERRY-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, May 03, 2001 8:42 AM Subject: Re: [OHPerry] Virus > What happens when you open this virus? 1. [OHPerry] Virus - Enough Said
    2. Angela Kneller
    3. Sorry I've been packing or I would have addressed this yesterday. Yes, there is a nasty virus making its rounds. It is NOT coming THROUGH a RootsWeb mailing list. Attachments cannot pass through the lists at RootsWeb. See the article on RootsWeb about the subject: http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com/announce.html#virus I think what happens is too many people 'jump the gun' and pass messages on the lists about "getting a virus on the list" when what happens is the virus is passed by *someone* who is subscribed to the same list. I've seen several posts on various lists stating something to the effect of "I got a virus on a RootsWeb list." I've gotten this virus sent to me numerous times in the past week or so. Between Norton and my firewall, it gets caught before I am aware of what it was. ALL have been what *looks like* responses to messages I have sent to mailing lists, quoting a portion of my message with a line at the bottom to see some attachment (sorry can't remember exact wording). Thus these are NOT coming from a maillist! I don't mind someone posting about a virus (as long as you make sure its a real one, not a hoax) as we all are on the computer. But please do not get out of hand with the discussions about viruses as that is not the purpose of this list. There is a list for virus discussion which you can find by going to http://lists.rootsweb.com/. One thing to always remember, DO NOT open attachments if you are not expecting one! Running a website I get plenty of attachments and some of you have probably received an email from me asking if you did send an attachment and what is it. So always know what you are opening BEFORE you open it! It will save you a lot of grief down the road! If you have any questions, email me privately at angela@kneller.com. Best Regards, Angela Kneller List Admin.

    3. WHY hasn't Rootsweb's VIRUS SCAN picked up on this and stamped it out? I got it too.....but your warning came in time and I hit delete immediately. Thank for that. But I thought Rootsweb had addressed the problem ages ago and put in their own virus blocker. Just curious... Phyllis in Atlanta

    2. What happens when you open this virus? I recieved it in response to a query that I had put out, before all the warnings were out there. I clicked the attachment and it downloaded, and when I went to open the file after downloading, my computer said that it wasn't a valid file and it couldn't be opened. I deleted it all right away, even out of the recyling bin, but would I know if I have the virus? I ran a virus scan on my computer, but it didn't find anything. I'm not sure if I did the scan right or not, though. I had it look through the whole computer...should I have just looked for a file? Would I know if I have this virus? Thanks! Lisa

But remember that the person who sends the virus may not know they are doing it. Many of the recent viruses replicate by automatically going through the victims e-mail address and either attaching the virus to anything that person sends or the virus sends a message to everyone in the address book. 3. I got this virus Monday night. We found a fix at the following address and got it cleaned up in a matter of an hour or so. http://bootheel.tucows.com/files4/fixmtx.exe Thank goodness, I caught it while it was in progress and stopped it before it got too far. It did cause a little bit of damage to my computer though. Not serious just a couple of files missing. For some reason my anti-virus program didn't catch it so it might be smart to run the fix even if you think you weren't infected. I don't even remember opening the attachment at any time recently so I still don't know how I got it or when. I restarted my computer Monday night after changing to a new keyboard. It kicked in the moment I accessed my e-mail which was almost immediately after restarting. Big pain to clean up!!!!!!!!!
