    3. Rootweb does not accept attachments. However, these viruses are passed direct to people who sent the messages. It does not go to the mailing list. Thus, the rule about Rootsweb not accepting attachments does not apply since it is not going to the list. ----- Original Message ----- From: "The Williams'" <williams@sunet.net> To: <OHPERRY-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, May 08, 2001 2:42 PM Subject: [OHPerry] Question re Rootsweb > Angela, does or does not Rootsweb accept Attachments? > > Carole Williams > > > ==== OHPERRY Mailing List ==== > To unsubscribe from OHPERRY-L, send mail to OHPERRY-L-request@rootsweb.com with the single word unsubscribe in the message subject and body. 3. We stayed last year at the VIP Motel just on the edge of New Lexington. It was nothing to write home about, but it was clean and convenient (at least it was clean last year). It is an older motel, but seemingly pretty well taken care of. There is a good restaurant just kittycorner from the courthouse that has a good breakfast. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Miriam" <mhf@bright.net> To: <OHPERRY-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, May 07, 2001 7:21 PM Subject: [OHPerry] Trip to Perry County > I'm hoping to make a trip to Perry County this week or next to do some research. 3. No Carole, attachments cannot pass through RootsWeb's lists. Sandy's email was correct in the article that is posted at RootsWeb's help desk. This virus is really making its rounds so just be careful! But no, you won't get it from a maillist itself. 2. Sandy Read
    3. For Carole and any others who may be wondering and debating, this is direct from Rootsweb's Help Desk: RootsWeb's mailing lists are filtered and attachments are not allowed. A virus that is distributed as an attachment will not reach you through a RootsWeb mailing list. A recent virus, and several imitations of it, may result in your receiving an e-mail (or a greeting card) with a virus attached, that appears to come from RootsWeb or from an address you are familiar with. Some virus will send a message to all the unread messages in the infected person's mailbox folders, with the virus attached. It may include the original message followed by instructions to look at the attachment. Another will use addresses found in the infected person's address book. They send messages using a forged address (for instance, using RootsWeb or the infected person in the return address). The subject line and message may indicate it is in response to a message you sent, making it even more credible. While it may appear to come from RootsWeb, that is only an illusion of the virus -- our address and the subject line is a forgery.

    3. On one of my visits to Perry County last year I stayed in Logan - just outside Perry County. There is good access from there to Shawnee and New Straitsville in the southwestern part of the county (which is where I was going), but it isn't particularly convenient for New Lexington. Logan also has an EXCELLENT restaurant for breakfast on the main street. 1. Re: [OHPerry] Virus - *Sorry but I must ask a question
    2. Angela Kneller
    3. That is the BadTrans virus, not something you want to open! What the virus does is respond to unread email, quoting a portion of your original message with a line at the bottom that says "Please see to the attachment." This virus has several names for the attachments, so don't rely on the name of the attachment! Here is the technical description from Symantec (Norton): "When the worm is executed, it drops the backdoor Trojan Hkk32.exe in the \Windows folder, and then executes it. It then copies itself into the Windows folder as inetd.exe, adds a run= line to the Win.ini, and displays the following message: "File data corrupt: Probably due to bad data transmission or bad disk access." The next time that the computer is rebooted, the worm will wait for 5 minutes, then it will use MAPI to find all unread email messages and reply to all of them. The worm will attach itself to the email, using one of the following file names:" Pics.ZIP.scr images.pif README.TXT.pif New_Napster_Site.DOC.scr news_doc.scr hamster.ZIP.scr YOU_are_FAT!.TXT.pif searchURL.scr SETUP.pif Card.pif Me_nude.AVI.pif Sorry_about_yesterday.DOC.pif s3msong.MP3.pif docs.scr Humor.TXT.pif fun.pif (More info can be found at http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.badtrans.13312@mm.html) Some of these file names would prompt me not to open it anyway! If you have an anti-virus program, update the virus definitions and scan all files on your hard drive. If you don't have an anti-virus program, (I strongly suggest that you get one) then check out the following site: http://www.angelfire.com/or/matney/page1.html There is some good info there as well as a demo program that will remove the virus from your computer. Hope that helps. I placed a question on this board & some time later received a couple of responses stating in the Subject that it was in re to my line I was asking about. Excited I hit download & then tried to open it. Under file name it listed - CARD under Save as type - PIF files. It said" file data corrupt, probably due to bad data transmission or bad disc." I don't know if I didn't properly download , if it was a virus, or if I wasn't computer smart enough . I did have reservations about this as it said- Me_nude.AVI. Subject RE: OH. Perry CO. 3. The Probate Court has birth and death records from 1867 to 1908. From 1909 and up they are at the Health Department. The state of Ohio didn't require birth or death records to be kept prior to 1867, though some counties did, Perry County unfortnuately wasn't one of them. (Sure would make documenting some of my ancestors easier!!) But marriage records from 1818 and up are located at the Probate Court. Have a good day! 3. An additional comment regarding birth/death records ... Although birth and death records exist in Perry County, it wasn't until the early twentieth century that the State of Ohio mandated a uniform format for all counties. Some of the more interesting pieces of information (e.g., parents and place of birth on death records) are missing from the early Perry County records.
