    3. Since my gg gfather, Thomas Noble seems to be inextricably linked to the Civil War Monument on Monument Square in New Lexington, I thought some of you might appreciate knowing what is written on the sides. Essentially it lists the names of some of the Veterans who served in the Civil War from the Perry Co. and surrounding areas, many of whom were in the 30th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry. 2. Sharon Guerra
    3. Daine, My great-grandmother died in Congo (Corning), Monroe Township in July (according to death record) or Aug (according to husband) 1909. Her funeral was not recorded at the same church (St. Bernard's) where she baptized her son just a year before, so I'm not sure where she was buried? Her name was Elizabeth Matisz. I've seen it spelled Mattisz, Matyas and Mytyes (on her death record). I'm also looking for Elizabeth's her first husband, Joseph Soltesz (Schultz?), who died between July 1907-1908, presumably in Congo. Highly unlikely, but maybe her second husband of only one year (Matisz) buried her with her first husband (Soltesz)...I doubt it. Thanx, Sharon _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp

    2. Hi Daine, I think Corning is in Monroe Twp. If so, I am looking for James A Clark, born about 1805 who married Catherine Gaver. He is mentioned in the 1883 Perry County book on Tim Fisher's site. But I can't find who his parents were. He had a child, James (B or R) Clark. We are not related to the Junction City Clarks. Any idea? Thanks Cathy Cathy Clark Garey CCGAREY@aol.com

    2. I too, am anticipating the Monroe Twnshp. book. my family lived in Corning/Rendville area. Patrick Burns and Elizabeth (Lizzie) McGinnis Burns. Patrick was born in Scotland approx 1857/1858 and died in Rendville, Perry County in 1900. Lizzie was from Ireland and died in Corning, Ohio in Feb 1929. I know Lizzie is buried in New Lexington , Ohio but can't locate Patrick's grave. He was a miner and died when he was about 42 yrs old. I am hoping to find his grave. I don't know if he has a marker. Are they just taking readings from stones? I don't know what funeral home he was buried through if he was at all. Lizzie was sent to C.L. Green Funeral Home. I have been looking for Patrick for a few years now. I did see his Naturaliztion paper in the Court House. Michele Finneran Williams

    1. Re: [OHPERRY] Re: OHPERRY-D Digest V01 #190
    2. No, Christy, I could find no Tinklers listed in the Salt Lick Township Death listings nor in nearby Townships. There is one Tinkler marriage listed in the Probate Mail Marriage Records: George Tinkler m. Emma Wakefield in Perry County in 1889 The Probate Court Birth Records also lists two children born to George and Emma: Thomas Tinkler b. 5-22-90 in Shawnee, Saltlick Township George w. Tinkler b. 10-24-95 also in Shawnee, Saltlick Township The Perry County Death Records also lists the following: John W. Tinkler d, 03-17-96 at age 5y 1m 3d in Shawnee A quick review of other books in our collection turned up no other Tinkler listings, although there may be some there that we just missed. If you live close enough you may want to stop by the PCC-OGS Library in New Lexington and review our collection of books and other materials. We now have about 500 books of family histories on Perry County Families as well as a broad collection of materials from other Ohio Counties. If you have an interest, I would be happy to provide you directions to the Library, times open, etc. Just let me know. Daine Maxwell DCMAX2@aol.com PCC-OGS Internet Coord.

    2. Hi Lea Ann, Thanks very much for your interest in the Monroe Township Cemetery Book. Yes, it will be available for purchase, and we're hoping to have it out around the end of the year. Several people have been working very hard all year on this project and they're making very good progress, but it's still quite difficult to predict the publication date, particularly since we're entering one of the busiest times of the year, so please don't hold me to that date - it may slip a bit. All of the Cemeteries have been "re-read" and the data for about 2/3 rds of the listings has been entered into the computer, so we're well on our way, but there's still a lot of detailed work to be done. We'll keep you advised on progress and when the books are available from the printer. What surnames are you tracing? My family first settled in that part of the state about 1800 and have been there since. Daine Maxwell DCMAX2@aol.com PCC-OGS Internet Coord.

    1. Re: [OHPERRY] Salt Lick cemeteries +
    2. Hi Barbara, First of all, I must apologize for my "machine" acting up and sending you a blank message in response to your query re Saltlick Township Cemeteries. That said, I'll try again. Yes, the Perry County Chapter, Ohio Genealogical Society has published books listing burials in all Perry County Townships except three and we're now working on those with Monroe expected to be the next one released. Books on Bearfield and Pleasant Townships are planned to be released sometime next year. As you may know, the 1850 Perry County Census lists 23 persons name Griffin living in Saltlick Township and one in Thorn Township in 1850. Two in Saltlick Twp were named Henry but they were both much younger than your Henry, with the older one having been born in Pennsylvania in about 1811. The Salt Lick Cemetery Book, prepared in 1989, lists only one Griffin, an infant son of John and Catherine Griffin who died May 10, 1852, and is buried in the Old Stone Church Catholic Cemetery in Salt Lick Township just a little west of Shawnee. There are also three Griffin Family members listed in the New Straitsville Joint Cemetery in adjoining Coal Township, but two are listed only as having been in the military during the Civil War, and include: GRIFFIN, Sylvester Co. A 31 Ohio Inf. GRIFFIN, J. L. Co. B 75 Ohio Infantry GRIFFIN, William B. June 15, 1925 76y 1m 18d Nelsonville, OH There is also one listing in the Interment Records of St Joseph's Rectory in Reading Township: MARTIN, James Hugh, Apr 19 1846 age 6 m. s/o Henry and Catherine GRIFFIN Some other Cemetery Listings include: GRIFFIN, Michael 01 Oct.1888 New Lexington/Maplewood Charity Lot GRIFFIN, Isaac Sept 3, 1898 - Mar. 20, 1966 New Lex./Maplewood Cem. GRIFFIN, Everett E. Aug. 22, 1922 - Nov.2, 1991 " " " " GRIFFIN, Mary Hamrick July 11, 1922 - The Perry County Probate Court Marriage Records also list a number of Griffin marriages, both male and female, from about 1832 to 1914. The Indexes for these records may be reviewed in the PCC-OGS Library in New Lexington. I hope this is somewhat helpful to you. If you would like to delve more deeply into any of theses or other records, I would suggest you visit the PCC-OGS Library in New Lexington which is open nominally six days per week throughout the year and the public is welcome. If you would like more information on the Library, please let me know. Alternately, the PCC-OGS Library offers a limited (one Surname) look-up service for a nominal donation to the Chapter ($10.00). If you are interested in that, just contact our Corresponding Secretary at PCC - OGS PO Box 275 Junction City, OH 43748-0275 Good luck in your search, and if I can be of further assistance, please do not hesitate to let me know. 3. Dear Barbara, I have Martha PHELPS marrying Willis GRIFFIN on 3 Nov. 1828, as you do. I imported this info from a GEDcom submitted by Jim JOHNSON and I have no idea what his sources are so you'll have to take the info "with a grain of salt". Anyway his submission was: http://genformum.familytreemaker.com/phelps/messages/198.html Phelps Family Genealogy Forum posting by Jim Johnston "spike2@lightspeed.net" He lists Martha's father as: Hezekiah PHELPS Jr. (b. ca 1770 in Conneticut) m. to Smanatha UNKNOWN (ca 1790). Hezekiah's father was, I suspect Hezekiah PHELPS Sr. (b. ca 1750 in CT) (no marriage information), son of John PHELPS (b. 1729 in CT; d. ca 1840 & buried in Old Stafford Street Cemetery, Stafford, CT) m. to Mary RICHARDSON (no further information). Hope this helps. Ken Runge, g-g-grandson of Renodyne PHELPS, "one of Hezekiah PHELPS Jr.'s brothers". ----- Original Message ----- From: "Barbara & George Grenier" <grenier@earthlink.net> To: <OHPERRY-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, October 14, 2001 7:04 PM Subject: [OHPERRY] Griffin/Phelps marriage
