I saw on the OHGenWeb site for Counties that Perry County needed adopted. I have been approved to adopt Perry county and am working on a page for it. This is my first message to this list. Jim that is an interesting bit of info - did you post it on the Perrycounty list - if not I am sure their are others who would be interested One of my aunts, Mayme Jones, born April 1884, married Wilbur Laube in 1909. She was from one of the Welsh families of Shawnee. Did you know they wee so numerous they had their own church. Must have been some great hymn singing in that church. I have never known a Welshman who did not sing. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ still nobody talking about Dixie - maybe there is no such hamlet. -- best regards - Hal

Hi Sandi - I had no problem connecting with Angela's Perry County OGS website at this address (main page): http://www.kneller.com/index.htm I wrote a short note to Angela by way of the website telling of your concern, and suggested she write a note to the list with information on how to reach Perry County's OGS website. There's so much excellent information there for those of us with Perry County roots. Reading all these messages about the coal mines peaked my interest. Has anyone ever heard of the Shumaker(or Shoemaker) Brothers coal mines. Not possitive on where they are located but know that my great grandfather was William C. Shumaker who i guess owned them. Any info would be greatly appreciated. I just finished reading Smoke in the Valley by William Yno. The book is fiction but is based on the strike and ensuing fire in New Straitsville. It also provides a picture of the living conditions, Catholics and Protestants, blacks and whites, etc. for the miners. I am from Perry County (Junction City) and have never heard the story that is related in the book as to what happened to the black scab workers employed by the coal companies to replace the strikers. Read it and let me know what you think. I think much poetic license is taken in writing this short novel. Carl Adcock udnelps@aol.com
Thank you ALL for the great links and interesting information on this subject! Wow, I had no idea!! As a small child, I really thought Gramma and Grampa were "telling me stories", but I see that the story was very real! I can't imagine how scary this might have been, not knowing when or where the fire would appear above ground again. Thanks all, Marcia
RE; Camp Chase, Ohio, Albert Arthur Pettet discharge, Connie; I am posting this to the list, because someone else might have some interest in the contents. I hope others will find it interesting, if not of direct interest. My grandfather was born in Ohio, on Sept. 21, 1833. When he entered the service, he lived in Hocking County. Ohio. His brother, Daniel Pettet, b 1837, from Hocking County was also in his unit. I am not an expert on the Civil War, but I understand the Union Army was under a lot of pressure around Washington, at the time. They felt it was important to get reinforcements to the area quickly, so the asked the states for volunteers to serve for 100 days. His regimental papers show he, along with the rest of his regiment, "Entered the Service", Ohio May 2, 1864, but they were "Mustered In", at Camp Chase, Ohio on May 13, 1864, by H. Douglas, Captain 18th Infantry, USA., and Mustered out Aug. 27, 1864, at Camp Chase Ohio. I'm not sure if that shows they only received 11 days of training, or whether it means something else. I also have a paper called, "The Presidents Thanks and Certificate of Honorable Service to Teamster Albert Pettet, 151 Ohio National Guard". It is an executive order thanking members of the Ohio National Guard for their "Patriotic and Valuable Service", in the campaigns of, In the Valley of the Shanandoah, On the James River, around Petersburg and Richmond, and the Entrenchments of Washington. The Secretary of War is directed to transmit a copy of this order to the Governor of Ohio, and to cause a CERTIFICATE OF THEIR HONORABLE SERVICE, to be delivered to the Officers and Soldiers of The Ohio National Guard, as Volunteers for One Hundred Days. Abraham Lincoln". At the bottom it has; "Now therefore, this certificate of Thanks and of Honorable Service is conferred on Teamster Albert Pettet, in token of his HAVING HONORABLY SERVED AS A VOLUNTEER FOR ONE HUNDRED DAYS in Company H, 151 Regiment of the Ohio National Guard. Given under my hand at the City of Washington, this Fifteenth day of December, in the year of our Lord, one thousand eight hundred and sixty four". It is signed by president Abraham Lincoln, and the Secretary of War, Edwin Stauntun. I shortened the contents here somewhat. Evidently every man in the Ohio National Guard, that served in the Civil War got a certificate. I wanted everyone to know that this is something to look for, in their ancesters records. I was lucky in that mine was handed down, from within my family. You notice the date of the certificate, is about four months after he left the service. My grandfather's discharge paper reads as follows; Know ye that Albert Pettet, Teamster of Captain John Oaks, Company H, 151 Regiment of the Ohio National Guard Volunteers, who was enrolled on the Second of May, One Thousand Eight Hundred Sixty Four, to serve 100 days during the war, is hearby DISCHARGED from the service of the United States, this 27 day of Aug, 1864, at Camp Chase, Ohio by reason of exoneration of dutys. (No objection to his being renlisted is known to exist). Said Albert Pettet was born in Muskingum County, in the state of Ohio, is thirty one years of age, Five feet 8 inches high, Light Complexion, Blue eyes, Raven hair, and by occupation when enrolled a Farmer. Given at Camp Chase this 27 day of August 1864 Capt. John Oaks Co. H 151 Regn. ONG commanding the co. Marcia: It is believed that the fires are still burning to this day. The fires were intentionally started in summer of 1884 by a group of striking miners. The Columbus and Hocking Valley Coal and Iron Company had brought in replacement workers for the striking miners and they didn't take too kindly to that. Fire was set to about 7 mines in the area, forcing the coal company to seal the mines. The fires have continued to burn; I believe I saw something in the newspapers in the early 1990's about some land in the area caving in from the burning fire. Found a page of New Straitsville pictures; some mine fire pictures are included: http://spsd.k12.oh.us/lc/Towns/NewStraitsville/newstraitsvillepictures.html ----- Original Message ----- From: "Marcia " <moose@surfnetinc.com> To: <OHPERRY-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, May 30, 2002 8:10 PM Subject: [OHPERRY] Mine fires-was Dixe Coal mines 1900 > > Thanks Brenda, > > How interesting that is, thanks. > > When did these fires take place? > > Marcia > > > > > Yes, Marcia, the story of the mine fires are true. I'm frustrated by not being able to find a letter I have from my grandfather's cousin describing the fires in the mine (New Straitsville). Going from memory it was started during the 1884 strike. They lit coal cars (half tracks?) filled with coal on fire and sent them deep into the mine. it was at about this same time that a couple of my great great uncles disappeared for a while into the countryside. The fire burned until the WPA put it out in the 1930s?? He told me that several years ago the Columbus newspaper did a story on it. You might be able to find it in the newspaper's archives. If I ever find the letter I will know the name of the newspaper. Marcia, I am from Shawnee also and I can tell you that some mines were known to warm the water in some drinking water wells. I also knew a woman (she died in 1988) who as a young girl stepped upon what she thought was solid ground only to have her leg sink into the ground and was burned by the fires. I remember when the roadway to Old Town collapsed due to the fires burning out the under pinning of the road. Some of the better views of the long burning underground fires were down in the Corning area. I believe that the fires were set back during the early mine strikes...in the late 1800s. But you'd have to check on that old story. Good luck in your search, Mary
Peg, One of Dora Ellen Johnson's children, Dora Ellen Donley, who married Butch Sayre and later George Wilson, still lives in New Lexington, Ohio. Her son, also Butch Sayre, owns a Real Estate Office in that city. She is 92 but sharp as a tack. You may want to get in touch with her. P.S. I inadvertently copied Nancy Spurgeon's death date wrong......it was 1928. The July, 16 1951 was Dora Ellen Johnson's death date. Good luck, Mary
