    3. Brent, There is only one motel in New Lexington, the V. I. P. 1-740-342-3505. I'm not aware of their rates. Most of the travelers that I have talked with say it is clean. The Perry Co. Probate office has Administration Records. What you need to remember is that when the County was formed in 1817, we did not have a Probate Court, as such. The first county seat was in Somerset and records were moved from there. I have been told that all of the very earliest records were kept together. (Probate, Recorder, etc.) Probate was organized in 1851. I believe that at that point those records were divided into Probate, Common Pleas, Recorder, etc. Over a period of years, "some" records have been indexed at Probate, and (in some cases) the indexes are all that is available for viewing. The records in Common Pleas are not completely indexed but those at the Recorder's office are. The Perry County Archives is one block from the courthouse. (on Brown Street) You will find earlier versions of the same records now in the county offices. To date, I have not found any old records there, that we don't have copies / indexes of in these county offices. The New Lexington library is also one block from the courthouse (on Jackson Street). Please stop in and view our genealogy collection. I hope this helps. Sue Saylor Cor. Sec. P. C. 3. Where would one find early (1820's-1830's) administration records for Perry County? There are Probate case files numbering from 1 to 6054 on film, but none of them seem to be prior to the early 1850's. Are there additional administration records of Perry County prior to the numbered case files? I am planning a visit to Perry County and am wondering if there is a place where I could search for these early administration records. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Brent

    3. Hi, Sorry all - I should have read through ~all~ my digests before posting about the perry county site *blush*. I'm glad you're back, Angela! And I'm happy to know we have such eager volunteers in times of need (Bonnie)! I would like to request that consideration is still given to the idea of moving the Perry County site to a rootsweb hosted location. It would ease the transition if Angela does decide to step out and would also avoid accessibility problems if a private site were to go down temporarily and/or permanently. 3. A similar discussion came up on the PA Allegheny county list. Apparently the Washington county site went through several coordinator changes, and eventually the site itself went offline. Luckily, the coordinator was able to move the site and save most of the information, but not all, I believe. Anyway, another county site administrator stepped in to explain the workings of the USGenWeb/Rootsweb sites (see below). Bonnie, could we find a "permanent" location for the perry county site? Checking the OhioGenWeb site (http://scioto.org/OHGenWeb/ohiomap.html) it seems that most of the Ohio county sites are indeed hosted by rootsweb. Notice that perry county does not have a working hyperlink on this page, either. Its easy to sign up for a free rootsweb site, so as coordinators change, the URL won't have to... Thanx, Sharon in PA ------------------------------------------------------------------ As far as Rootsweb..... many of the USGenWeb sites are housed at Rootsweb.... however, quite a few are not. A lot of the Pennsylvania sites are at pa-roots.com --- Jefferson, Armstrong, Clarion, etc. Most anyone can get a site at Rootsweb and even set up their own Washington County site at Rootsweb (and folks have done it Butler County - - check out http://www.rootsweb.com/~pabulte2 )..... but the "official" county site is the USGenWeb/PAGenWeb site no matter where it's located (Rootsweb or elsewhere). >From time to time, Pennsylvania USGenWeb/PAGenWeb sites do come up for adoption. There's a complete list of the Pennsylvania sites at: http://www.pagenweb.org/ --------------------------------------------------------------------- Thanx, Sharon D. 3. I wanted to report that the former coordinator, Angela Kneller is still the coordinator of the USGenWeb Perry Co.,OH. Since her computer was down and she had a problem with her website, Perry County was put up for adoption thinking it had been abandoned. Then I stumbled in and you know the rest of the story.... Angela's site is at http://www.kneller.com/index.htm It is a wonderful site with alot of Perry Co., information!!! Applause! Applause! I had fun creating a webpage....which I love to do! I had fun meeting all of you! And I investigated some genealogy research that I wasn't familiar with before! Fun for me....some confusion for you! Thanks for the welcomes and Thanks Angela for being understanding! Bonnie __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? 3. Folks we have a problem - Shirely at <sbraunbeck@alltel.net> is the one that started this very interesting series of notes on Dixie - coal mines- mine fires - Shawnee History - Perry County railroad history. I know from past experience with Perry County Listers that many are interested in more than the "dry bare bones" of birth, marriage and death dates. I know many agree with me that are ancestors only become real people in our family histories if we can tell what church they went to - what mine or field or railroad or road or canal or bridge or barn they built. I know you consider this kind of antidotal reflection an important part of our genealogical work. So it is OK to post this kind of thing on the Perry County List. But Shirley who started the whole interesting exchange has not seen the most interesting notes - how about sending her a copy if you wrote something recently to me - whether or not you copied the list. I thank you - regards Hal PS I would give a great deal to have someone like Jim describe the location of the early railroad serving Carlisle, PA. I have a family story that requires my great-grandfather, a railroad man - to arrange for a buddy to sound his personal goodbye toot-toot as the train left Carlisle - while he went back home to catch his first wife and his best friend en flagrant - now that is straying from Perry County Genealogy - good by - Hal ----- Original Message ----- From: "Shirley Braunbeck" <sbraunbeck@alltel.net> To: "Arthur Laube" <zurlauben@mindspring.com> Sent: Sunday, June 02, 2002 9:10 PM Subject: Re: Dixe Coal mines 1900 > What is the link to your posting? 3. Dear Barb, As far as I know, Angela is keeping her Perry Co. Genealogy and History site and everything on it...it is also an ALHN,OHN, etc. site. When I looked at it over the weekend, I saw that She has previously done alot of excellent work on it and it is her personal page with her personal copyright. I think, she just wanted to resign as the coordinator of the USGenWeb Perry Co., OH. I have emailed her but do not know. I only found out she was the previous coordinator by reading the mailing list. 3. Hi all, Although the Bristol Tunnel fire occurred during the same strike, it was unrelated to the New Straitsville mine fire. The idea was to cut off the outlet for shipping from Shawnee (which used a different railroad line than the Hocking Valley Line from New Straitsville anyway. The Bristol Tunnel on the Shawnee-Newark run was destroyed coal shipments were brought to a halt. The fire DID provide the impetus for building the Zanesville and Western line as a second route (via Corning to the east) into Shawnee.
