I found my Grandfather in the index and his last name was spelled incorrectly. I contacted the site and they said that was how it was originally put in and it could not be corrected. So if they have changed their policy, I'm glad to hear it. I'll try to notify them again. Thanks Amy.
http://www.ohiohistory.org/dindex/results.cfm Have you checked this web site? I looked at it as Dan and Daniel. Are you sure this is his first name. He must not have died in Ohio.
Emily, Thanks so much! You just confirmed my suspicion that the William Kennedy in Jackson Township was my William's son. The age and his wife's name match. The Thomas Kennedy you found was another son of my William. I would love to have the available information for both families - you can mail me at stacy@sands-edge.com if you don't think the list will be interested. :) I'm especially interested to see if their mother (Sarah) shows up in either of the households. It's entirely possible that William, Sarah, or both had passed on before 1870. Could it be that it was lost or possibly it was never written up? If you have a more specific date of death, you can play around with different search criteria on the advanced search options at http://www.ohiohistory.org/dindex/advsearch.cfm Because they used OCR software to create the online index, you sometimes have no idea how the name will appear in the index. They are working to correct the entries, but there are still many that are wrong. I've had a great deal of success using the advanced search options, then looking for the person by date of death. Also, be certain to keep the search as "All Counties," as he may not have died in Perry County. There is also the possibility that he didn't die in Ohio, but was transported back here for burial. In this case, there would be no death certificate in Ohio. You might want to look for an obituary for him to see if it would have any details of his death. I was wondering if anyone would have a way of checking for a death date or certificate of death for my great grandfather. His name was Andrew Almashy. He is buried in Springer cemetary on Bohemian Heights road in Hemlock. He died in 1929. I have had no luck with the Historical Society web site. wrote to the courthouse a couple of times in New Lexington and to the Historical Society in Columbus. o seems to be able to find a death date or certificate for him. Could it be that it was lost or possibly it was never written up? His home was about a half mile from Springer cemetary which I believe is Salt Lick twp. He also once owned a farm where the Buckingham School is. I suppose everything was sold after his death. It was in addition to the home place. Most of the land was bought by a Herman Stickdorn who was married to a niece of his. Any information that someone might have as to that death date for him would be greatly appreciated. Maybe one of these days I can make a trip back to Ohio and do some digging in the Libraries holdings in New Lexinton. Thanks!! Dan Almashy Danville , Va. Hi! I have not tried to respond to a request before, so I am not sure that this is the proper technique. However, I do have som info about the William Kennedy question. I did some brief scanning through of part of the Perry county census for 1870. The William Kennedy in jackson Township was 38 years old. His wife's name was listed as Margaret. She was 34. They were both listed as born in Ohio. There were several children listed. I also found a Thomas Kennedy in Mill Creek Township who was 47. His wife was Sophia. he was also born in Ohio. They had a long list of children. If you need more info on either of these, let me know. I can alos continue looking for your William Kennedy, if it will help. Sue, Thank you - that does help. :) The William Kennedy in Jackson Township may be my William's son. I'm surprised that the cemetery books for Monday Creek and Jackson Townships don't list him. Hrmmm. Maybe the stone has been destroyed. :( Thanks so much for taking the time to look him up for me. -Stacy ----- Original Message ----- From: "Sue Saylor" <susays@ohiohills.com> To: <OHPERRY-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, June 17, 2002 5:19 PM Subject: Re: [OHPERRY] William KENNEDY of Monday Creek Twsp. > Stacy, > There is a Wm. Hi all, I'm searching around for information on William KENNEDY. I would appreciate it if some kind soul would look in the 1870 census index and see if he was still alive then - I don't yet know a death date. I'd love to narrow down when I'm looking for so I have a hope of finding his tombstone, obituary, will, etc. Here's what I know: William was born around 1790 in PA. He married Sarah/Sallie HENRY in Mifflin Co., PA on 9 Mar 1815. They eventually migrated to Perry County, Ohio, and had several children. The ones I know are: James K., Thomas P., Clarissa, Sarah, William P., Robert (T. or Y.), John. He shows up in the 1850 and 1860 censuses in Monday Creek Township. Thanks for your time! -Stacy
The obits. in the Perry Co. genealogy collection is mixed years, and to date, not indexed. The very oldest ones have been found when we were reading newspaper microfilms or donated by patrons and members. The majority of the obits. are very recent (1990's) We have a part time worker in our genealogy area on Mon. Tues. Thurs and Fri. She is usually there after 10:00 a.m. Some days she is there until 4:00 and other days she leaves at 12:00. A quick call to the lib. (genealogy dept.) on one of these days should answer your question as to whether your person is in our file, or you may send me the name and I'll check the next time I am there. The Ohio Historical Soc. in Columbus has a vast collection of newspapers on microfilm, but I don't know if they do look ups. The P. C. Chapter OGS welcomes donated material such as obits., family & county histories, yearbooks, pictures, school & church information, and pedigree charts, etc. Sue ----- Original Message ----- From: "Sue" <pode1@earthlink.net> To: <OHPERRY-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, June 14, 2002 3:56 PM Subject: Re: [OHPERRY] Death Certificate > Sue > Do you happen to know how far back those obits go. Marlene, If Barbara Wortman was pronounced dec'd within Perry County in 1989, there should be a record on file at the P. C. Health Dept. Their number is- (740-342-5179). If Barbara was in a hospital at the time of death, her record should be on file in that county, as well as the State. (P. C. does not have a hospital). Muskingum Chapter, OGS has indexes of their Health Dept.'s death records in their collection and we have most in the P. C. collection. The Bureau of Vital Statistics in Columbus, OH. should also have a duplicate record of all deaths in each county, but be prepared for a wait in getting a reply. They are very busy. We have combined our collection of newspapers (1918- present / some missing issues) with those of the county's, and they can be viewed at the P. C. Archives, Monday - Thurs. 8:30 to 4:30.
