Hello- I am temporarily in the Hebron area and wish to research my family. Are records kept in new Lexington? Does anyone know the hours of their archives? Thank you. Melinda Seyler Researching Edmund, Stevens, Shrider, Rarick, Weimer, Neel, kautermann.
Same hours as the courthouse, 8-4 or possibly 8:30 AM The archives is in a separate building just a down the street a bit closes for lunch 12-1 or they did the last time I was there. And they also closed on Friday--that may have changed. And sometimes I have been in a courthouse when an office closed for lunch! Once in Harrison co in the probate court, they told me they were closing for lunch because one of the clerks was out sick, leaving only the two of them. I thought but didn't say it out loud "why the heck don't you take separate lunches?" Seems to me locals might have business to do on their lunch hours in that court or any. Athens has Perry Co records which were sent there before they opened the old armory for the archives. Or did. Did they send them back? Athens, Ohio University has the regional archives. Your Kauterman is probably my Kattermans/Cottermans/Kadermans--just a guess. Hi Listers, I have a George Norris Jaynes and wife Doretta that used to live in Shawnee, Perry Co. and I have found them in the 1920 Scioto Twp. Ross Co. Census. He is listed as a laborer at Camp Sherman. Would anyone know anything about Camp Sherman? What is it? Also, it has been told to me that George Norris Jaynes was a minister, but I have found no records on this. Any help on this would be appreciated. It was told to me that he went to Hiram College to become a minister. Does anyone know how I would find this out? George Norris Jaynes was born in Kentucky July 31, 1858 to parents Joseph and Juliann (Shuff) Janes. He first showed up in the Perry Co. Saltlick Twp. census in 1900 (as far as I have searched) and now he is in Ross Co. (Chillicothe City) in 1920. Somewhere along the line he went to Newark also, but haven't gotten that far in the research yet...:o) Thanks for any help you can give me... Marcia
I am researching the George McCabe family. George McCabe (born about 1849) married Sarah Johnson in Vinton Co. in 1870. By 1880 They were living with their children in Jackson Co. Sarah died later that decade, and then George married Mary Nance about 1887-88. In 1890, they had one child, Charles Ellsworth McCabe. They were listed in the Jackson Co. census records through 1900. In 1810, the George and Mary had moved to Muskingum Co., living close to George's son, Frank and his family. About 1916, Mary died, and in 1920, George was living with Charles and his family in Reading Twp., Perry Co. George died in Perry Co. in 1937, and apparently buried in Muskingum Co. Is anyone else researching this family? Thanks. Donna Radcliff
Hello. I'm new to this list and would like to take a minute to post my information. I'm looking for further information on Margaret "Peggy" DeGarmo who was married to first Peter O'Leary, then to Thomas Martin Downey. She also had 3 children out of wedlock prior to her marriage to Peter O'Leary. The 3 children were: Cushing, Angeline and Jacob DeGarmo. She was married to Peter O'Leary (born abt 1798 in County Carb, Ireland) abt 1836 in Perry County, Ohio. They had one known child-James Peter O'Leary born June 26, 1838 in Perry County. It is unknown to me when Peter O'Leary died, but, according to a cousin, Margaret remarried Thomas Martin Downey January 9, 1854. However, I don't agree with this date, as she is listed with him in the 1850 Census in Monroe Twp of Perry County. Thomas died about 1858 in Ohio. On June 15, 1854, James Peter O'Leary married Rachel Shilling (born April 24, 1824 or 1826 in Morgan County, Ohio). They were married in Perry County. Rachel is the daughter of Rueben Shilling and Mary "Polly" Stedman. In 1850, this family was listed in Trimble Township of Athens County, Ohio. Margaret, James Peter & Rachel, and many of the children of Thomas came to the Liberty area of Vernon County, Wisconsin. I'm not sure if they came together. Over time (and as circumstances required, I think) the O'Leary named changed to Leary then to Larry. Along with these surnames some other families that came from this area fo Ohio to the same area of Vernon County, Wisconsin are: Jennings, VanDyke, Fish, and Shilling. It seems that they all connect and interconnect many times, the further I dig. I apologize for the lengthy post, but would appreciate any leads on this group. Also, what types of vital records are available in Perry County for this time period? We would like to invite you to re-visit our website, The POORHOUSE STORY (a clearinghouse for information about 19th century American poorhouses) at http://www.poorhousestory.com We just posted a second picture of the PERRY County Infirmary. But it sure does not look like the first one we posted! And it looks too altered to be the "large addition" mentioned in the historical notes we had previously posted from the History of Fairfield and Perry Counties, 1883. We would really appreciate it if someone could provide us with more information about these buildings. DIRECTIONS: At the homepage (link above) click on POORHOUSES BY STATE, then on OHIO on the table of states, and finally on PERRY on the table of counties. If you have been to the website recently you may have to click REFRESH or RELOAD on the browser to see the new information. There are other pages on the site which may give you some interesting perspective on poorhouses. They are off the homepage and include: the HISTORY page and the LETTER TO GENEALOGISTS as well as FEATURED ARTICLES. There are great tips for researching poorhouse records for yourself on the RECORDS page; and you might want to subscribe to our (almost) monthly newletter (which you can do in the lower right corner of the homepage). The information on our site will only grow through the submissions of generous readers. If you would like to e-mail me ... please do so off-list because I cannot maintain subscriptions to as many lists as we post messages on. (You can use an e-mail link off one of our web pages.) We hope you enjoy the site! Thanks, Linda Crannell (aka=The Poorhouse Lady)
I can't help you much on the church except that it is in Perry County. The numbers following the names on the census index are the person's age and the page number on the census records. Everyone with the same number was on the same page and therefore, probably all the same family. I can't go back any farther than 1850 so can't help you there. Hello Ruth- Thank you for your response re Edmunds in Perry County. The names you sent from the 1850 census are my family in total. So I guess that means that the brother and mother were somewhere else. I really need to go further back than 1850. Does anyone have any idea how to do that? I recall hitting this block before. Is there no earlier census for Perry County or were records destroyed somehow? How about a circular route: does anyone know when Grace Lutheran church in Thornville was founded? I believe Zion was the Lutheran Church before and seem to recall New Reading as the place. Is my memory correct at all? What County is this church in? What are the numbers listed after the names? Are these the family number? Thank you. Melinda Seyler
