Hi! Jim, We corresponded a long time ago about Ashbaugh's and Joseph's. I have since learned that a Nellie Meek married a Joseph, first name unknown, and had a daughter named Ida. She later married Andrew Jackson Ashbaugh, who was about 29 years older than her. They had no children. Do you have anything further that you can add to the Joseph connection? Hi Ruth, VERY interesting indeed! I would be interested in the year, if you have it. Here is what I know about Josephs in Perry County ... My line came from Wales to Minersville (near Pomeroy) in Meigs County. After moving across the river to Mason County, West Virginia, for a while, my great-grandfather John Joseph moved to XX HollowShawnee in 1881. His first wife was Ruth Hughes, a neighbor girl (but properly Welsh, of course - the Welsh stuck together!) from Mason County. Their oldest daughter Rose married into the Ashbaugh family and they lived on East Walnut Street in Shawnee - the house is still there. Ruth died shortly after the birth of their third child, Daniel, in 1885. In 1886 John Joseph remarried. John had two brothers in Perry County. One was David Joseph, who died in 1904 in Shawnee. He is listed in the 1900 census as a widower, so HE might be a possibility for the husband of Ida. I don't know anything about any of his children. Another of John's brothers was William Joseph, who lived in Buckingham. He married a girl with the unlikely name of Vice - Vice Rosaball. It is listed that way in the Perry County records, but I think it was really a corrupted version of Vicki. William and Vice had four sons. One was named Daniel, born in 1899. I don't know anything more about him. The second son, Frank Joseph, married Helen and they are buried in the Buckingham Cemetery. I don't know anything more about the other two sons yet. There was ANOTHER Joseph family in Perry County. They were unrelated to me as far as I know, but they came from Wales to Pomeroy proper. One of the sons, William Joseph, who was about the same age as my relative in Buckingham, settled in Hemlock. He was a machinist in a coal mine there. I think he had two sons. One was named Arthur, as I recall. I have that written down somewhere. The wife of one of the Joseph boys was Mottie Sanders, as I recall. If you have any idea when this marriage to Nellie Meek occurred, I would be VERY interested in researching it further. Keeping records in Ohioi. Some death records were maintain in Fairfield Co., Ohio in 1867. This can be found in the Probate Court [where marriages were kept.] In 1908, the responsibility for keeping births and deaths was transferred to the Health Department or Vital Records officies. In looking at the various counties, the dates run from 1856 to 1867 as keeping records. Births were also keep as early as 1856. These records are not complete, some with just the name of the person and the date of death. You might try the Probate Court for your deaths. Roberta

Hello Barbara, I went to New Lex yesterday. Trying to find out who the Father of Henry Griffin (married to Sarah Rush) is. As you might remember, I was able to find on the 1860, Perry County census Allen Griffin (my grandfather) as a child of Henry and Sarah. Trekked up to the door of the archive building and it was closed. Went to the court house to see why. The lady that takes care of the records was not in that day so it was closed. Oh well! I made the most of the day by going through marriage, birth and land records. A lady by the name of Mary was very helpful and took the time to talk to me about the past records of Perry County. She said that the archive records in New Lex are not indexed yet. The old, old records are still at OU. They are in the process of micro filming the records in the court house (births and marriages) so they can send the old books to the archive building. (probably so they can be shoved in a box someplace along with everything else.smile Anyway, I did look at the copy of the recording of the marriage of Henry and Hannah thinking that the transcribed reporting to Latter Day sight may not have been transcribed correctly. It was and very clearly written is the strange surname of Hannah. Mary said that (of course) the person who married them probably didn't spell her last name correctly. I had some copies made of a lot of material pertaining to Hannah and Henry. George Griffin was Henry's admin. after his death sometime after 1849 or 50. I would like to send you this stuff to you if you are interested. There is a Michael Griffin mentioned in these legal documents also. This Henry seems to have come from Va. because of some mention of land that was in dispute in Va. that had to be settled after his death. Some of the land in dispute was in Saltlick, Perry Co. Also, a land grant from the US (President Jackson) to Henry. Included in some of the copies I made is George Griffin's filing of settlements after Henry's death. A lot of Perry Co. names and Va. names are mentioned in all of the documents. Let me know if you are interested or not. If so, I'll be glad to send you copies. Jerry, Thanks for the info. It was me doing the looking and Sheila provided some info for me. I checked out the stuff Sheila mentioned which is the same as you've given below. But it has Mary married to a Zortman (no dates though). With the ages of my Jacob & Mary's children, I suspect that Jacob was her only husband. Their first daughter, Lucinda, was born when Mary was 21 (unless she was widowed extremely young). At one time, I was told her last name was Lonas. So I've been chasing all kinds of leads. I'm still trying to find which line of Leffler's my Jacob belongs. Oh well, at least it's keeps me busy!
