It is highly likely that Elizabeth & possibly William are Henry Black's parents. Because it's not easy to find "proof positive" I tend to the inclination to investigate all possibilities that show themselves in the hopes of finding a hidden nugget. More a matter of hoping to eliminate a family from consideration sometimes. :) Lacking records from the 1810 Ohio census makes things more difficult for those of us who have families who came to Ohio during the 1800-1820 time frame that's for sure. It seems you and I have much of the same information on Henry and family, sometimes with slightly differing dates but definitely tracking along the same lines. Regarding Frank Church/Black. Something else to consider checking might be the possibility that Frank's mother married one of the Black males (Robert would be the most likely possibility). Not as likely as having one of the daughters as his mother but still a possibility. It wouldn't be unusual for a family to refer to a step-grandchild as just a grandchild and for that child to eventually take on the step-father's last name. ----- Original Message ----- From: Lakeshore32 To: [email protected] Sent: Friday, May 11, 2007 7:51 PM Subject: Re: [OHPERRY] OHPERRY Digest, Vol 2, Issue 106 BLACK DANIEL 40 M W PA OH PERRY MONDAY CRK TWP 1860; Elizabeth (his mother) 81; Nancy 48; Jane (his wife) 44, all born PA. Family lore has it that our heritage is German, however there is nothing I've found so far that would cement that as fact. A recent slog through census records has put that idea even more in doubt, though again it is all pure speculation. Rachel is not shown as being with the family in the 1850 census for Monday Creek, though she does appear in every census after that as a daughter to Henry & Susanna. I do find a Rachel Black, 13, (the right age) in the census for Rushcreek Twp, Fairfield Co living with Robert, 30, b OH Margaret, 60, b PA Daniel T, 19, b OH Martha, 20 b OH...(all 4 show they have real estate valued from $3000--Robert to $200 for the other 3) Then Rachel, 13, b OH Margaret Black, 81, b Ireland One dwelling before them is William Black, 29, b OH (real estate valued at $600) Elizabeth, 30, b OH John, 2, b OH The 1880 Census for this William indicates his mother was born in PA, his Father in Ireland. The fact that Robert, Daniel and Martha have property in their name and that Margaret (who I would assume to be their widowed mother) also has property in her name seems to indicate that they inherited said property. It is possible/likely that William, found "next door" could also be a son of the deceased and being younger than Robert received a smaller inheritance. It seems obvious that the elder Margaret Black must have been the mother of the deceased Black, husband of the younger Margaret and would not have reason to be left any part of an estate. That Rachel has no real estate in her name could mean that the father died prior to or shortly after her birth, or that she was not a direct family member. I have not found any records to date of a Rachel being associated with this family at any other time. All that to say--I haven't a clue as to who Henry's parents were, but I'm still digging and hoping. ----- Original Message ----- From: [email protected] To: [email protected] Sent: Wednesday, May 09, 2007 10:51 PM Subject: Re: [OHPERRY] Mary Jane Black b 1853 d 1854 daughter of HenryBlack-Susanna C... I have also found errors in official documents and offered corrections. Some counties are more willing to make corrections (with proper documentation) than others, but some simply refuse to correct an original document. I feel that a footnote on the record or an addendum in the back of the file would be a great help to future generations, but I guess it is up to the individual counties as to how they want to deal with it. Re:Isaac Hitchcock I am working on a family history project involving my ancestor Isaac Hitchcock. He was last known to be living in Somerset, Ohio in 1835. He was born in 1763 in Maryland. Joihn F. Hitchcock, who may be his son, may have been buried in Friendship Methodist Episcopal cemetery in Maxville, Ohio. And, John's son, Capt. Henry K. Hitchcock (served in Civil War) was definitely buried in the Friendship cemetery. I have a photo of Henry's gravestone. If anyone on the Perry county, Ohio, listserve has information that may help me pinpoint the location of Isaac Hitchcock's burial, and possibly that of his (possible) son,John F. Hitchcock (born 1807, died 1868), I would appreciate it. I am also working on verfying whether or not John F. was indeed Isaac's son. Any information in this regard would be very helpful. Sincerely, David W. White Washington, D.C. ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.
Hi - I am looking to see if an Isaac or Susanna Hitchcock left a will or estate in Perry County, Ohio? The last record that is avaiable on Isaac while he was living was his Revolutionary War Pension application dated 1835 which was later rejected. At that time Isaac was living in Perry County, Ohio. I am trying to locate this information to help someone complete a supplemental in the Sons of the American Revolution. Thank you, Christopher T. Donna, I am the Perry Co. Chapter, OGS Treas. and Cor. Sec. I also have helped with the publishing of several books for the Chapter during my time as a member. The "Perry County Births, 1867 - 1908" was published by our group. One must realize that this is a "true copy" which means the data was Xeroxed and shrunk to fit a standard size book, not copied by hand. In my personal copy I see the birth in question, but mine reads that the mother was Vina Harlon. When the index at the Probate office was prepared (many years ago) the w was apparently misread as an n. These letters can be very similar in some of the older hand writing, so I can appreciate how the error could be made. Often the writing appears to be foreign if one has not had some experience reading it. In all fairness to the clerks at Probate, we need to realize that first, the girls working there now were not the ones who prepared the index; second they can not change official records without absolute verification; and third they are doing what is asked of them within their job duties. Most rules and regulations, prices, etc. are pre set. You would be surprised at how many requests are made of them based on someone's assumption or family lore that has no proof. :-( I have found errors, also. One in particular was in a collateral line of mine where the father -in- law is incorrectly listed as the groom on the marriage cert. (This was not a transcribed version, but a Xerox copy of the original.) I would not have known this was wrong had my Mother not known the individuals personally. Errors happen, and sadly, will happen again because we are human. Census records are a perfect example for many of us following the wrong trail because of someone's inability to spell correctly or misunderstanding what might have been said with an accent, taking data from a person who didn't know the facts, etc. As to the birth index that we offer for sale, I can make a notation of this in my personal copy and add it to a file I have for any corrections that need to be made to other publications that we print or reprint. This file may contain anything from misplaced punctuation mark to data that is incorrect. When we become aware of an error, we make every attempt to verify and correct it. Cemetery inscriptions are something that we strive to read very carefully, but old stones are often times very difficult to read. When possible we Xerox, scan or take digital pictures of data to avoid as many mistakes as we can. All in all, we feel we do the best that we can to preserve data and bring genealogical material to the public. To those of you owning a book of births in Perry Co., OH: Charles Walter COATES has the wrong mother named in the index. Charles Walter COATES was my grandfather, so I have spent the $30 needed to get this corrected and have sent the probate court proper documention. Isn't that something? They made the error, but I have to pay $30 to get it corrected. His mother was Vina HARLOW. The Perry Co. books have his mother as Vina HARLAN. You can't imagine how this can confuse a researcher when trying to make the next left in generations. It took me 1-1/5 years to get th correct name. I was looking for Vina Harlan. Please note this correction: CHARLES WALTER COATES born: 16 Feb 1894 Perry Co., OH parents: Charles T. COATES & Vina "Vinnie" Harlow sources: Death Records, Marriage Records, Obits, Censuses. If anyone knows how to get in touch with any publishers having the incorrect information please advise. Sincerely, Donna ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.
Sharon, "The Perry County, Ohio Female Marriage Index, 1818-1914" is currently out of print. We have a member who has been entering the data into her computer (as time permits) from our marriage books. It is our hope that this material will be used for a future (revised) publication, but no completion date has been set at this time. Many libraries have copies of the marriage indexes in their genealogy collections. Perhaps a library near you has a copy? If not, subscribers to this site often help with brief look ups.
