We rec'd this notice about the Hopewell Baptist Cemetery and thought it might be of interest to some of the OHPERRY readers. Anyone who has Church or burial information for this cemetery is urged to respond to Marilyn or myself or both. Our records of this cemetery are not complete due to the overgrown condition of the cemetery at the time of our reading. Any additions / corrections are most welcome. Hats off to Marilyn and her family! Sue PCC OGS Subject: Regarding Hopewell Baptist Cemetery.. On a quiet township road in Northern Perry County, nestled in among a border of walnut, sassafras, locust trees, and fallen down fence sits a beautiful cemetery rich with American history. As you walk along the many stones you will find war heroes from the Revolutionary, Civil, and War of 1812. Along side of them you will find men, women, children, and infants who were once the stepping stones to the foundation of this great country. Looking at the dates on these people's stones you can't help but wonder how hard their lives must have been. What kind challenges and hardships did these people face? How sad it must been to lose an infant to something as simple as influenza. I think also of the great accomplishments in their lives. Returning home safely from a war fought proud and true. Building businesses and homesteads that have developed this area. Many of the names on the stones are still known in Perry County today. Names like Forsythe, Cooper, Skinner, Williams, Ream, Beard, Worden, Melick, Thompson, and Johnson. Others have families that moved on to places far away. These people have not been forgotten because the cemetery is regularly visited by descendants who also still place flowers on the markers and other looking for ancestors to fill their own family trees. Something important has been lost from this cemetery though. Burial records and/or plat maps cannot be located. Perhaps they were lost when the church that once stood along side was destroyed, or possibility when the church bookkeeper pasted away the records were tossed out by family members who didn't realize what they were. As you can imagine, many of the stones are in bad shape and some are even broken. Time and weather have taken their toll. Foundations are sinking, stones are falling, and moss and vines are making others impossible to read. In the short year my children and I have been caring for this resting place, we have cut brush, repaired fence enclosures, and cleared sticks, leaves, and poison ivy. With the help of the American Legion, many trees that were pushing stones over have been removed. Still much work has to be done. Upkeep will be a continuous battle. It is a battle I feel is worth fighting. It is my goal to preserve as much of this cemetery and its history as possible.I am currently making arrangements for a "Community Workday" scheduled for August 18th 2007. I have contacted a local monument company who is willing to come out and assist us with their knowledge in repairs. We will be pouring new foundations, resetting toppled stones, power washing those that are blackened with age and hopefully restoring the long lost beauty that was once here. I have been seeking help from many organizations such as the American Legion, Hopewell Township Trustees, Sons of the American Revolution, Perry County Historical Society, and the Genealogy Society. This is going to be a huge project and budgets are tight. I have been fortunate enough to have a nice group of volunteers ready for hard work. I also have some gravel donated. Much is still needed. Expenses will come from equipment rental, stone and quick crete. We would also like to place a Historical Marker naming this "The Hopewell Baptist Cemetary" once the restoration project is complete. If anyone reading this article can supply me with any information, maps, or records of the burials here, I would love to here from you. And of course anyone who could help with a financial donation toward the preservation and future general upkeep, that would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance for any help you may provide. Together we can make a difference if we just take the time to care. Sincerely, Marilyn Metzger 9325 Twp Rd 46 Somerset, Ohio 43783 740-743-3892 -- No virus found in this incoming message. Here is how it goes regarding my CHURCH inquiry. My great grampa Frank E Black 1863 Maxville OH - 1927 San Diego CA was a railroad conductor for the So Pacific RR; he started working around age 16 for the railroad in OH as brakeman for the Ohio Central RR. He was raised by his "maternal" grampa, Henry and Susannah Carey Black. The family moved from Perry Co to Hardin Co OHIO about 1867, after the Civil War, in which Henry and 5 of his sons served (have 1905 hist bio of Frank mentioning regiment, etc). For 1870, the Black family is in Hardin Co OH and Frank shows as F E Church age 6, grandson. For 1880, Frank shows as Frank Church, grandson, living with his gramma Susanna as Henry died in 1879. Henry and Susanna C Black had many children. The girls were as follows: - Rachel Black b: 1837 d 1906 md 1877 James Firestone - Elizabeth Black b: 1838 d 1874 md 1872 John C Sleighter d 1879; they had Eddie Sliester per the 1880 census who also worked for the railroad as brakeman later and went onto CA with my grampa who went there in 1891. Chas "Ed" Sleichter b 1872 OH md Minnie Kennedy and had Ray. - Matilda A Black b: 1841 d 1921 md 1866 James M Davis; they had several females I have the death certificate for my grampa Frank E Black in which it shows his father as James _______; no mother listed. I think that Frank used either his stepfather's name here per his wishes via his widow, Maggie Current Black, OR, that his father was indeed a James Church or even a Frank Church. It does appear that Frank E Church took the family name of Black at some time; and likely after both of his grandparents had passed (Susanna passed in 1892). I have seen this family listed and wondered about the Thomas J Church who moves on. And, I have also looked for a Frank Church and a James Church as well. The James Church and family of Hardin Co was married to an Eliz Halsey so this family does not apply. I believe that Rachel Black Firestone (James) or Elizabeth Black Sleighter (John C) is the mom of my Frank E (Church) Black. Frank E Black md 1885 Maggie Current and had my grampa Clinton E Black 1886 OH - 1973 CA. I may never know who the father of Frank was but I continue to look - for Church, etc. Also, my mom said (now deceased) that she only was aware of Isaac, Avery, Hattie, and Charles Black (Chas onto Mansfield), so this checks out. Mom also mentioned that when someone died (she had assumed a lady married to a Black) that she remarried a Mr Sliester. This would also change things and make one of the Black male children of Henry and Susannah C Black eligible, but, it would not explain the surname of Church for my Frank E (Church) Black. Not unless one of the Black males was married or engaged to a female Church. Thanks for yours response and any input further. I have a site called TEETER KIN at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~teeterkinmy/index.html There is some Black genealogy there and also photos. God bless. Does anyone know who the Mrs. C. T. Daugherty was that is mentioned in the e-mail below? My great-great-grandmother was Phoebe Daugherty who married Jesse McLaughlin. They came from Rockingham Co., VA and lived in Perry and Hocking Counties. Don't know whether their parents migrated to Ohio with them or not and don't know their parents' names. Yes, we still publish the Perry County "Heirlines." Our last issue of 2006 was sent out only a few weeks ago. We are in the process of changing editors at this time. The Spring issue is being prepared now, and we hope to be back on schedule soon. Just a note to say that the Ohio Historical Society has The Tribune pretty intact from the mid 40's to 1991, but 1982 to 1991 are not filmed, just bundles of papers. Other possibilities for Perry County obits are: Zanesville Times Recorder The Athens Messenger The Logan Daily The Morgan County Herald Dick Dew

No i haven`t checked the funeral home, will do that tomorrow. Thanks Nancy
Thank you Sue, He died there . It may have been in a hospital in Zanesville. That is all i have to go on. And for sure him and his wife are in Shawnee cem. Nancy
The Times Recorder is based in Zanesville and would have covered his death "if" anyone submitted an obit. for publication. Did you check with the Humphrey Funeral Home of Shawnee? Sometimes the Funeral Home place the obits. in the newspapers for the family. Do we have the correct date? Nancy, I just rec'd the latest batch of newspaper obits. from the Times Recorder and the P. C. Tribune to work up for our Chapter's files. (Our members save these and then we post them on cards in our collection.) I did not see any obituary for Cremeans through June 1, 2007. Did he die here?
