Mrs McLees was the mother of longtime MCCOGS member Eleanor McLees Aven ZANESVILLE: Elsie Elliott McLees, 98, formerly of Zanesville and New Concord,went to her final glory on Thursday, April 26, 2012, at Forestview Health Campus, Zanesville. Elsie was born February 3, 1914, in Rich Hill Township, Muskingum County, to the late Ray W. and Martha Watson Elliott. She was the eldest of seven children. She graduated in 1932 from the last class of Rich Hill High School and played girls basketball earning a school letter. She married Lewis "Gail" McLees, October 1933, and he died January l981.She was a farmer's wife and when her eldest daughter went to college she started working outside the home at Baker's Restaurant, Mosaic Tile, then taught herself typewriting and started working for McKee Grange Insurance as a secretary, clerk, and agent earning her broker's certificate. She was a lifetime member of the Rix Mills Presbyterian Church, held several officers positions and taught Sunday school. She was a member of the Rix Mills Homemakers' Club, Rich Hill Grange, was a former 4-H advisor and was a volunteer at Bethesda Hospital for 40 years accumulating 11,885 hours. At the age of three, she was struck by lightning that came down the chimney and was reported by the newspaper to be fatally injured. As we know, this wasn't the case. She is survived by four daughters, Eleanor Neal Aven of Spring City, Pa. Gayla (Earl) Smith of Norwich, Janet Drake (Larry) Sebach of Zanesville, and Martha "Marti" (Dick) Hughes of New Concord; sisters, Lenna A. Nowels of Loudonville and Edith (Charles) Hahn of Columbus; and brother-in-law Robert Tom of Chandlersville; 12 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter. In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers and their wives, F. Irvine and Marge Elliott and J. Lawrence and Betty Elliott; and two sisters Genevieve Peyton Brown and Ada Tom; and brother-in-law, Jack Nowels.Visitation hours will be held Sunday, April 29, from 2 P.M. - 5 P.M. at the Mock-Miller Funeral Home, 63 West Main Street, New Concord. Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Monday, April 30 at the Rix Mills Presbyterian Church with Rev. Jim Gibson officiating. Interment will be in Salt Creek Cemetery near Rix Mills..In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Elsie's favorite charities, Red Cross and Christ Table or to the Rix Mills Presbyterian Church.
