This obituary appeared in The Zanesville Signal, Zanesville, Ohio 7 March 1931 EX-SLAVE IS DEAD AGE UNKNOWN John Hale colored a former slave reputted to be more than 100 years old died Friday evening at the family home 942 Carey Street. He was born in Virginia and was emancipated from slavery at the close of the Civil War, when he came to Zanesville. He was a member of Park Street Wesleyan Methodist Church. Surviving are five sons, William, Charles, Thomas, Alexander and Elza all of this city. The body will remain at the Mader-Peoples Funeral Home until time for services at 2 o clock Sunday afternoon at Park Street Church. Rev Roberts will officiate.
