This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: James, Abbott, Abbot, Walton, Fuller, Pierson, Cunningham, Moorehead, Dillon Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/QZB.2ACI/3558 Message Board Post: I'm looking for anyone researching the family of attorney George JAMES, attorney and possibly a Judge in Zanesville, Ohio, Muskingum County. George James was originally from Fredericksburg, Virginia (b. abt 1801-03 or possibly 1810 - I've got conflicting info on his DOB). Based on some very sketchy info I've managed to find, George's parents or at least his James family (Uncle maybe) may have been successful merchants in the Fredericksburg area (I'm having a hard time getting much detail on him and his family in this area). In about 1830, George arrived in Zanesville, Ohio were he practiced law as an attorney from about 1830 until his death there in 1872. He is referred to in at least one document as "Judge James" so he may have been a judge there at some point. He may have gone to school or at least migrated to Ohio through Kentucky. George married Martha Abigail Abbott in Zanesville in 1833 (Martha Abigail Abbott/Abbot, b. 1821 in Newburyport, Massachusetts). George and Martha James apparently became fairly well-to-do and seemed to circulate in high society social circles in Ohio. They had several children, one of which was Rebecca Walton James (b. 1836 in Zanesville). A son George Abbott James (b. 1838) was a Harvard Law School graduate that practiced law as a successful attorney in Boston. The known children born to George James & Martha Abigail Abbott James (all born in Zanesville, OH) are: Martha Virginia James (b. 1834) Rebecca Walton James (b. 1836) George Abbott James (b. 1838) Andrew B. James (b. 1841) Harriet B. James (b. 1843) Richard Fuller James (b. 1845) Elizabeth Pierson James (b. 1847) Edward James (b. 1850) At least 4 of their children, including Rebecca, were given what appear to be family surnames as their middle names. At least one is an obvious match (Abbott) but three others I've yet to make any connection to intermarried families, business associates or close family friends. The three surnames in question are Walton, Fuller and Pierson (the "B" middle initial of Andrew or maybe Harriet might be for "Butler", their mother Martha's father's given name, Butler Abbot). I am particularly interested in tracking down the Walton connection if possible. BTW, Rebecca Walton James married William Randolph Cunningham of Kentucky in 1865 in Zanesville, OH. They moved to Kentucky, then on to Missouri, eventually ending up out west living in eastern Washington state (Adams County) until their deaths in the early 1900s. Martha Abigail Abbott James died in 1852 in Covington, KY. George James remarried sometime between 1860 and 1870, marrying Hannah H. (maiden name unknown; former married name possibly Moorehead), born in about 1810 in Maryland. In the 1880 census, Hannah, now a widow again (George James died in 1872) is living with what appears to be a widowed relative, probably a sister-in-law, also named Hannah (Hannah S. Dillon, possibly the widow of Isaac Dillon, Insurance Agent of Zanesville) and a nephew, Frank W.S. Dillon, age 14. Elizabeth "Lizzie" Pierson James is also still living with her step-mother Hannah in the 1880 census. It does not appear that Hannah and George James had any children together (both too old). If you are researching this particular James family, I would welcome hearing from you and will gladly exchange any info I have on this family or the Abbott family that George married into. Thanks.
