A couple of comments on the books; History of Muskingum County: Perhaps the best book is Early History of Zanesville by Elijah Hart Church. Mr Church was born in Zanesville in 1809 and wrote a series of articles 1874-1880 on the early history of Zanesville and its citizens. He was a contemporary of most of the individuals mentioned and he seems to have known them. The book is by Jeff Carskadden and the articles are reprinted even with the typographical errors. All articles appeared in the Zanesville Courier. The later histories of Zanesville and Muskingum County reference these articles. This particular book was published in 1986 by The Muskingum Valley Archaeological Survey, Zanesville, Ohio. it is available in many libraries. The other book published in the 1920's by Thomas W Lewis entitled "Zanesville and Muskingum County, Ohio, is a three volume set and is quite good. It is also available in many libraries and I have seen it at local auctions and antique shops for a reasonable cost. Buyer Beware of the Sutor reprint as there are missing pages from the original published in 1905.
