(Greenwood Avenue). It was first established in 1835 on 7 1/2 acres the city bought for that purpose. The first burial was that of James Durham (1790-1835). The name used was CITY CEMETERY from 1835 until 1882 when it was changed to GREENWOOD CEMETERY." (Capitalization per book.) "There had been an estimated 100,000 burials made in Greenwood Cemetery by 1944. There are no records and no monuments for many individuals before 1895. Fires in the superintendents house and in the Market House were blamed for the loss of records for 1835 thru 1894. Many interments, names and locations, from that period will never be known. Sometimes as a grave was being dug remains from a previous burial were discovered." Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
