Steele will held at 10:30am, Monday, April 14, 2014, at the Brucker-Kishler Funeral Home, with Pastor Matt Blau officiating. Burial will follow in Poplar Forks Cemetery, Gratiot, Ohio (Licking County) . Friends and family may call from 2-4pm and 6-8pm, on Sunday, at the funeral home, 985 N. 21st Street in Newark, OH. Mr. Steele, age 91, of Gratiot, Ohio passed away Thursday, April 10, 2014, at Genesis Good Samaritan Hospital, Zanesville, Ohio. He was born August 24, 1922, in Newark, Ohio a son of the late Homer Warden and Esther (Bendure) Steele. Mr. Steele graduated from Newark High School and served in the US Navy during WWII. He was stationed in Attu, Alaska. For 25 years, he worked at Sears, Roebuck & Company and for many years worked as a quality control specialist at the Newark Air Force Base. Mr. Steele was active in the community; serving as a paramedic, firefighter and dispatcher with the National Trail Volunteer Fire Department and was instrumental in the building and apparatus expansion over the years at the fire department. A 65 year Mason, Mr. Steele was a member of Acme Lodge F.&A.M., the Teheran Grotto, O.E.S. #486 at Brownsville, Ohio and was a 32nd Degree Mason. He was also a lifetime member of both the VFW and the American Legion Post #756. He is survived by his daughter, Patricia (Richard) Boyd of Cumming, Georgia; grandchildren, Melissa (Brett) Hunter of Wisconsin, Darin Boyd of Gainesville, Georgia; a step great granddaughter Morgan Hunter of Wisconsin. He was preceded in death by his wife, Erma Louise (Snider) Steele in 1997. They were married in 1945. Also a brother Mac Richard Steele and a sister Gladys Ellington preceded him in death. Memorial contributions may be made to the West Muskingum Schools Academic Fund; envelopes will be available at the funeral home. The family would like to express a special thank you to all of the caregivers who assisted Harold over the years, your kindness and compassion will never be forgotten.
