Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.ohio.counties.muskingum/6167.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I cannot help, but found this interesting. The Buckinghams were an extremely prominent family in Muskingum County, Ohio and their genealogy has been extensively collected by family members. Philo was a very common name in their family, appearing over several generations. I notice in the LDS site that a Philo Buckingham was attributed to be the son of a James (I believe) Buckingham of Muskingum County and the birthdates match, though I do not see documentation. This particular Philo, born about 1825 was a farmer and the LDS site said he died in 1853. I also noted in some old historical papers he won a prize in an 1850 agricultural show for one of his horses. The contributor to the LDS site showed no spouse, nor children. The other Philo Buckingham and Imogene you mention show in the 1850 census as not living in Muskingum, but Vinton County.

    1. [OHMUSKIN] Israel or Alpha Buker's Will
    2. Jan Buker
    3. Hello List, We have been trying to determine if Israel or Alpha left a will. We have Israel's complete Military Record's from the NARA. We are still attempting to prove the relationship between Alpha and his son Israel m. Mariah Boal. We have found no evidence to this point in Illinois regarding this Israel's death, we did find the record of his 2nd marriage that tied him to Alpha. We are still hoping to find a way to tie him to his son Charles Franklin Buker for the purposes of the DAR and FFO. If any of you Buker researchers have found anything then we would certainly appreciate the help. So far all the FFO applications do not mention Israel as a son of Alpha. We have not received all of them as yet though. Thank you all and Happy Holidays. Jan Buker

    1. [OHMUSKIN] Fw: Obit John O Shrigley husband of Matilda Shroyer, Died 25 July 1901
    2. Dug
    3. Subject: Obit John O Shrigley husband of Matilda Shroyer This obituary appeared in The Adamsville Register, Adamsville, Ohio J O SHRIGLEY DEAD After Months of Suffering Death Comes as a Sweet Relief John O Shrigley a well known resident of Salem Township died at the family home in Adamsville, Thursday evening after a long illness of complication of diseases. So severe and of such a critical nature had been his sickness that at various times for several months past the members of the family gathered around his bedside expecting the sad end to come. Nothing but his iron like constitution prevented the spark of life from fleeing and lengthened his days upon the earth. John O Shrigley was the son of Samuel and Mary Shrigley and was born in Highland Township 27 August 1823 and was therefore 73 years 10 months and 28 days old at the time of his death. On 4 July 1850 he was married to Matilda Shroyer with whom he lived for over half a century and who still survives him. Two sons and a daughter were born to this union. One son died in his eleventh year and the other two children are living and are Mrs Rose Bainter wife of J H Bainter who resided near town and Oron Shrigley the well known blacksmith of this place. Mr Shrigley has lived and near Adamsville all of his life except from 1854 to 1856 when he was a resident of Sonora. He was a successful farmer and acquired for himself and family a fine farm with good buildings and other conveniences. In 1893 owing to feeble health he built a fine residence in Adamsville and moved to this place where he remained until his death. The deceased was a man of much force of character which gave him an independence that was visible in every act of his life. He loved to mingle with his associates and friends but never wanted to be dependent upon them for anything he could do for himself. He was very generous and kind and was ever ready to lend a helping hand to those in need or desiring help. In church matters he was always interested and never failed to take an active part in keeping up the church to which he belonged. He became a member of the New Hope Lutheran Church in 1842 and continued an active member as long as his health would permit. Mr Shrigley was a charter member of Hubbard Lodge No 220 F&AM. Besides the widow and two children the death of the departed one is mourned by two brothers William Shrigley of Illinois and Noah Shrigley of Zanesville and two sisters Mrs Mahala Stiers of Zanesville and Mrs Duama Harlan of Hillsboro, Ohio. George Shrigley of Coshocton is also a half brother of the deceased. Funeral services were conducted by Rev N N Harter Sunday forenoon at the New Hope Lutheran Church after which the remains were interred in the cemetery at that place.

    2. Simon Hill and his family arrived in Hopewell Township in 1812, according to a Revolutionary War Pension request of his brother John, and the date of his daughters marriage there in Muskingum Co.. He and his brother George Hill lived along the border of Muskingum Co. and Licking Co.. In 1818 and 1819 he and George applied for a Revolutionary War Pension, in Licking Co and both were granted checks. Simons’ on 9/4/1919 for $63.76. He died in 1820. His son William Hill married Mahala Henslee on 1/29/1818 and on 11/11/1819 at 22 years of age he buys 177 acres on Hopewell Twp Rd 609. One might suspect that he used the money of his father and then kept his widow mother since William was the oldest son and Simon stated that he was sick at the time of the application. Williams' property was located next to William's sister, Dorothy and Jesse Redman. My questions are, where is Simon buried? Is he with his son William and Mahala Hill who were buried in Mount Olive Lutheran Cemetery (now Mt Olive Methodist Church on Mt Olive Church Rd, Hopewell Twp, Muskingum Co. OH)? Or was he buried on Williams' farm? Or maybe on Jesse and Dorothys' farm like they were? (Jesse Redman and wife Dorothy are buried along the back fence row on top of a hill, on Jim Scott’s old farm on Hopewell Twp. Rd 609, Muskingum Co.) Does anyone know of the earliest burials at Mt Olive? Are there any other cemeteries that precede Mt Olive in that area? Simon’s wife is Margaret Hume from the Hume family of Hume VA. She died in 1840 when I believe that Mt Olive was certainly used. Where is she buried as well? The Hill family moved in mass from Fauquier Co. VA. They moved and intermarried with the Henslee, Holmes, Shaw, Redman, Fink and Francis families in VA and Muskingum Co.. Any information that one might have of these families back in VA or Simon’s parents William Hill and Catherine Stacy who married at Overwharton Parish in 1745 of Stafford Co VA., would be welcomed! Bob Hill Granville, OH PS I also have an interesting tidbit. My grandmother always told storied of slave being kept over the rear of her big old Virginia brick house on Poverty Run. We all knew that Ohio was a "Free State". In Samuel Drumm's will of 1855 (have a Copy of it), it showed a lot of good furniture, many pictures, lots of china, 32 Windsor chairs, and all types of farm animals, including bee hives. It also showed that he had ten slaves with the Privilege of All, who were sold to William H. Kelly after Samuel's death. Oral history wins again! So much for free states before the Civil War. Our educated minds would not accept what Gramma knew to be a truth. Mr. Drumm still used the Blacks that he owed in Virginia as labor in Ohio. We don't teach this as a sad part of our northern history! That beautiful home and 640 acres, bought by the Hill's, was destoyed for Dillion Dam in 1956.

Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.ohio.counties.muskingum/474.2.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I believe that Thomas Morton was the father of the Morton children. He was originally from Maine and came to Muskingum County in 1818, according to the obituary of his son Gilkey Morton. To date, I have found who I believe are 10 children of Thomas Morton and his wife Sylvina Gilkey. Sylvina Gilkey was the dauther of John Gilkey and Sylvina Thomas. Robert Morton left Muskingum county and moved on to huron county and was the Sheriff in the 1830's. Eliza, Matilda, and Gracey were all daughters of Thomas and Sylvina and sister to Robert Morton. My gr gr gr grandmother was Rebecca Morton who married George W. Parks. How do you connect to this intricate little puzzle. I have several documents that I can share. Drop me a line at krystalou812@yahoo.com. Take care and I look forward to hearing from you. Blessings, Krystal
