I don't know if you remember but I believe we have corresponded before. We seem to be researching all around each other. I think it's been a few years. Someday I think we may find we are in fact related. In answer to Sherrod's Chapel, I have been back to Muskingum County researching several times. From what I understand, there is a list which was constructed in the 1930's or so (I am away from my home at the moment & trying to do this from memory). It seems it is the only list available on the cemetery from anyone. I have spoken to many people including township officials in charge of the cemetery. They all tell me this is the only list they know of. No one seems to know what happened to the church records or any original records. Therefore, the list is incomplete as they constructed it from headstones (that happened to be left standing at the time) and also family records which happened to be available at the time. I do have a copy of that l! ist (at my home). I would be happy to share it with you as soon as I can. There are quite a few Lanes on it. But many that I am certain are buried there are not listed. I also visited the cemetery myself. It makes me very sad to see the condition it is in. It has been vandalized badly over the years and neglected. Many stones missing and badly damaged. Looks like it has been a party spot for teens (lots of beer cans etc.). It is located in a wildlife refuge way back in the woods. Quite a hike to get to. I found it a very sad, sad place since I know many of my kin are there. Let me know if you would like a copy of the list. I know of one female Lane who died young about 1852. I have no name, but she is suppose to be buried there. I'm thinking her brother, Augustus Lane, may be buried there also. He died before 1856. Hi, I am doing research on the Sinclair/St.Clair, Francis and Hyatt/Hiatt families in the early 1800's. The Hyatt/Hiatt family lived in Meigs Township near the Morgan Co., line. The Francis's lived in Salt Creek Twp. and the Sinclair's lived in Rich Hill twp. Is there anyone out there that is doing research on this family. Could you tell me what was the religion of the people that lived in the areas at this time? I am now in Salt Lake City, at the Family History Lib. and am trying to get all the information that I can on the families. I think you for any help that is given me. Richard Swank

This Grand Lady was the catalyst for the Muskingum County Genealogy Library. It was under her stairwell that the first books were kept and her house was open on specified hours for people to come and do research. We all owe her many thanks ! Bijou E. Knock (December 20, 1913 - April 13, 2007) Bijou Knock, 93, of Zanesville, died at 12:20 p.m. Friday, April 13, 2007 at Summerville at The Inn at North Hills. She was born December 20, 1913 in Cincinnati, Ohio a daughter of the late Fred and Edna Stoffer Stockton. She graduated from the University of Dubuque in 1936. She was a member of Trinity United Presbyterian Church. During her life she was a volunteer for Each on Teach One, on the Board of Directors of Federated Women’s clubs of America, Past President of Council of Church Women’s United, , Y- Auxiliary Board in Vincennes, Indiana, Board of Directors of Westminster House in New Castle, Indiana, on the Board of Directors of Eastside Community Ministries and an Elder at Central Presbyterian Church. Surviving are a two daughters, Nancy Walters of Cincinnati, Ohio and Beth (Dr. Martin L.) Curtis of Zanesville; two sons, Jim Knock of Fairfax, Virginia and John ( Naomi Phillips) Knocks of Arcadia, PA.; nine grandchildren, Trisha ( Steve) Alaniz, Debbie ( Robert) Quinn, Tom (Theresa) Walters, Mona Knock, Benjamin Knock, Benji ( Michelle) Curtis, Brad ( Miwwako) Curtis, Tim Curtis and Aaron Phillips Knock; nine great grandchildren, Rhiannon and Brian Knapp, Katy and Kevin Quinn, John and Elizabeth Walters and Alex, Anna and Austin Curtis. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. H. Calvin Knock who died in 1992 and a brother, Lincoln Stockton. Bijou donated her body to The Ohio State University in Columbus for Medical Research. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Lucinda's family all moved to Muskingum County, OH in the late 1820s and I believe Lucinda and Richard most likely also went there. There is a Richard Hocking in Muskingum County, born in 1792 in England, according to the 1860 census. He is living with a woman of about 46 years with a bunch of kids. This may be the Richard I'm looking for - perhaps Lucinda died sometime between their marriage and about 1840?? Thanks for any help. "Wm. C. Townsend. (abt. 1843-1898) (obit.) "This pioneer of the granite monument industry, and during all his career as such the most conspicuous man in the business, died at his home in Zanesville, O., June 8, after a short illness, aged 55 years. His death takes another name from the list of veteran soldiers who came out of the civil war less robust than when they entered it. He had carried with him ever since that terrible experience the baneful effects of the exposure and trial he had passed in the service of his country. "To him more than to any one man contemporary with him, must be accorded cerdit (sic) for the development of the granite monumental industry. From that of retailer he pushed his business with such energy that his house commanded a wholesale trade in granite and marble monuments greater than any single concern in the country, having branches in New York, with quarries in Scotland and Italy. He gained this distinction and success in the face of opposition that would discourage a less courageous spirit. He was an honest man. He was a firm friend. He made enemies, but these universally respected him for his upright character. Not much more can be said of a manly business man than could be truly said of him - that dead those who waged commercial contest with him, sorrow that he department life at the zenith time of his success, before he could enjoy the full measure of life's tribute to the industrious and persevering. "Mr. Townsend had so fixed his worldly affairs that they could be carried on uninterruptedly when he was called away. The business will be continued by his partner and heirs.
