I know there are about 5 whole stones still standing there (I work right down the street from it) and about 10 - 15 partial stones. It was not taken care of very well originally because, I believe it was a private cemetery before the city took it over. There are also three schools in the area and kids wreck havoc on cemeteries, most of them not having been taught appropriate respect. Also, there is Duncan Falls Cemetery, several Philo cemeteries and german families were buried in the old "St. Nicholas Catholic Church Cemetery". Chances are more likely that most older residents were buried at the old Pioneer Hill (also called Hill Top or Main Street Cemetery) which no longer exists. If I am not mistaken, it was one of the very first cemeteries in Zanesville, dating before the Capital was here in 1810. Though there were many pioneers buried there, the area was not maintained very well. One of our society members put together a presentation about the area that included articles dating from the early 1900's that discussed the dis-repair and plans to update and fix it. It appears that didn't happen. Mr. John McIntire's grave and the grave of his daughter were moved from the Pioneer Cemetery to City grounds around Zanesville High school - I have photos of that area when we re-dedicated it last year. The graves, I believe, of the other pioneers are still there, but the area is fenced off and little, or nothing, remains of headstones or markers. I personally have not been to that site, maybe I should go check it out. You can write to the genealogy society for a copy of the transcription - I believe from 1975 - of the Moxahala Cemetery. Copies are 10 cents a page plus postage. I don't know right off hand how many pages there are. The young lady who did the presentation on Pioneer Hill cemetery planned to put a copy of it in the genealogy society. I don't know if it is there yet. It is possible that you might want copies of it as well, you might want to consider that. Having looked for folks from the 1810 - 1830's myself, the records are so skimpy and even if there are probate records, they won't list the place of burial. That makes it really hard to find graves that early. Also, the fact that the graves are almost 200 years old doesn't help any, since most of the older stones just weren't made to hold up that long. Whitle there were people living in this area as early as 1790, the actual records don't start til about the 1830's. . . Going from my memory of the stones that are at Moxahala. . .there is a George there, a Copeland there and Irvin sounds really familiar, but it has been a long time since I looked at the transcription. Does anyone have a connection that may have proof this Thomas ( married to Sarah Clark) is brother to William Kelly Crozier. s/0 Ralph and Elizabeth McMahon? I would love to read the obit or death certificate for Thomas which would shed light on my confusion. My William Kelly Crozier was born in Belmont County, as was his brother Thomas. I do have the family book for the McCoy's and do know where you can buy one at if this is the same family. I do not have all of the family listed on many of the other branches, because I have no need to do that since I have the family book already. But, I do have a great deal listed on our direct family line on the sites (esp. rootsweb) of my own research. However, if you do not find a lot of information on your line, I do know where you can buy the outline book of the! other branches like I have. The lady who wrote the book is, B. Isabel Lockhard. You can google her name and find out a lot more about her if you like. She's a retired scientist professor who taught other doctors neuro science. She's up in her 90's so if you do want a book, I'd encourage you to not wait too long. She also has a copy of the book in the Coshocton County Library. Now, having said all of that. Hello, I am needing a lookup for a death date for a person named America Jones, he was born abt. 1810 in Maryland and I did find him on the 1880 census living in Washington township. So I imagine it wasn't to long after that, that he died. He married Rebecca Atkinson in Maryland, don't know when she died either, she was also on the 1880 census, aged 58 at that time.
