(Perry, Muskingum OH). That didn't surprise me as "Hook" would be a very rare family name for FRA or GER. I did find several listings for HOUCK: Houck, Joph d. Oct 19, 1842 (62-10-20) Joph usually = Joseph, but I believe this should read: John (see below) Houck, Barbara d. Aug 25, 1882 (87-1-17) in another plot, not adjacent: Houck, Matilda d. Aug 21, 1850 (37-6-20) wife of John A John Hauck was early into Muskingum Co. He is on the 1807 Salem Twp. tax roll, and there is a John "Houk" on the 1832 Perry Twp. plat map (his property is near the western township line with Washington Twp., midway down). The Muskingum marriage books show John Hauck m. #1 Catherine McCann on 3 Oct 1805 and #2 Barbara Trout (the wife bur with him in St. Paul) on 4 May 1920. An Anc. Family Trees chart gives these vitals: John Hauck, b. 29 Nov 1779 NJ, d. 19 Oct 1842 Perry, Muskingum OH and says there's a will filed in Muskingum Co. dated 8 Sep 1842. The F.T. chart lists only one child: James Madison Hawk b.1811 NJ. I guess a birthplace of NJ for a son possible, but it seems a bit odd that John should go back to NJ after he was already in OH. In any case I think there were more children. A John "Haack" is in the 1820 Zanesville, Muskingum census with this household: 1 male 26-44 1 female 45 and over 1 male 16-25 1 male 10-15 1 male under 10 1 female 16-25 1 female 10-15 A John Houck is in the 1830 Perry Twp. census (name spelled Houch) just 3 properties from Anthony Trout, with this household: 1 male 50-59, 1 female 30-39 (that would be Barbary, wife #2) 1 male 20-29 1 male 5-9 1 male under 5 1 female 5-9 1 female under 5 This John (Jno) is also in the 1840 Perry census. The oldest son has moved out. 1 male 60-69 1 female 40-49 2 males 15-19 1 female 15-19 1 female 10-14 1 female 5-9 The 1850 Muskingum census is interesting. Carlton 1 Nov 1838 In the 19th and early 20th c., whether a person said they were from Alsace or from GER might depend on their age and political sympathies. Alsace and Lorraine changed hands sev. times. Most of Alsace gradually became French bet. 1600-1800 and remained so until the Franco-Prussian War in 1870, at which time Germany annexed both Alsace and Lorraine. They were part of the German Empire until they were reclaimed by France in 1918 (Treaty of Versailles). They were once again taken by Germany during W.W. II but reverted to France in 1945 and have been French since then. The Alsatian dialect, however, is closer to German than to French. Muskingum Co and OH didn't keep birth and death records before 1867, as far as I know. I suppose there could be some St. Paul church records going back further, but I rather doubt it. I suspect the grave inscriptions and some family bible records are about all that has survived from that far back. However, that's a question you should ask of the MCCOGS folks. The portion where he would have sworn that he was 21 y.o. or older has been inked out, but the document indicates that she should have been 18 y.o. or older. However I have her birthdate as 2 Feb 1828, which would have made her 16. Catherine's death certficate gives her father and mother as Nicholas Grether and Anna Hook, both b. in Germany. Other census data give Catherine's birthplace as Alsace. Are there any Hooks in the graveyard that you mentioned? George Frederick Grether and 5 members of his family are bur St. Paul Lutheran Cem. Muskingum: Grether, George F. b. 26 Mar, 1818, d. 6 Feb 1893 Grether, Sophia, d. Sept 27, 1862 (29-6-22) wife Infant child Grether, Louisa S., d. 13 Sept, 1864 (4: 1-4-15) Grether, Maria C. , d. 16 Sept 1864 (?17/12? -2-27) Grether, Magdalene d Sept 13, 1864 (1-7-10) Since the 3 children died within 3 days of each other, it's likely that they fell victim to some sort of epidemic (typhoid? scarlet fever?). George Frederick Grether m. Sophia Herman on 11 Sep 1845 in Muskingum Co. The Grether stones in St. Paul are in close proximity to the stones of Nicolas Herman (d. 28 May 1867 aged 82y 3m 22d) and his wife Anna Margaretha Herman (d. 29 Dec1862, aged 73y 10m 5d). I suspect Nicolas and Anna Margaretha were the parents of Sophia Herman Grether, though I cannot prove that yet.. I believe the 1850 Salem Twp. Muskingum census shows Nicolas and "Margaret" living in the household of Geo. They likely had a third dau, Charlotte Herman, who m. Frederick Young b. 1818 GER on 3 Jan 1843 in Muskingum Co. Young was a miller; he later moved to Morgan Co., George Frederick Grether is also described in the 1860 Perry Twp. census as a "farmer and miller", born in Baden GER. The 1860 Perry Twp. listing for Geo. Frederick Grether is a mess. Grether and wife are listed as "Greater", Nicolas and Margaret Herman who are lodging with them are listed as "Hennan", and F. and S. Grether's children all have the wrong last name ("Hennan"). There is also a Rebecca Hennan age 35 in the household with 4 young children.
