I thoroughly researched this James et al family quite extensively back in 2006 but then shleved it when I couldn't get any farther on the Walton line. George James' (the Zanesville, OH attorney) mother was Rebecca Walton, wife of Rev. William James. Per her headstone in Zanesville, mother Rebecca Walton James was a "native" of (assumed to mean she was born in) James City County, VA in about 1767 (using her age and death year noted on her headstone). If you have information on her Walton family in Virginia, I'd be grateful to hear more about that. I'm researching this because the Walton name found it's way into my family through the James daughter, also named Rebecca Walton James (b. 1837 in Zanesville). She married William R. Cunningham and eventually ended up in eastern Washington state. Cunningham had a lot of business dealings there with my Great-grandfather, Charles Marshall (no middle name) in Adams County, WA. I know almost nothing about Charles prior to his arrival in Adams County in about 1900 so for all I know, he could have been related to this family, possibly through Mrs. Cunningham (Rebecca Walton James) since this is where the Walton name apparently came from. Charles gave his son (my grandfather) the middle name of "Walton" and no one knows why. It's also interesting that Cunningham named their (his and wife Rebecca's) homestead "Walton Farm" in Adams County, WA so clearly this Walton name seemed to carry some kind of importance in this circle of people, I just don't know why. I would love to see if there's a Marshall connection with this Walton family in Virgina (or maybe even with the James family, who were merchants in VA). If so, this could be the long overdue, badly needed clue I've been looking for all these years, trying to break through this stubborn brick wall on my Marshall research.
