Dr. Susan Jones Sears Dr Susan Sears was a descendant of the Janney family of Muskingum County NEW ALBANY: Dr. Susan Jones Sears, a resident of New Albany, Ohio, passed away on February 28, after a long battle with col-rectal cancer. She was born in Zanesville, Ohio to Thelma and Thomas Jones. She is predeceased by her parents; and brother, Larry; and is survived by her husband, Dennis Sears; daughter, Tanya; and several wonderful nephews, a niece, and cousins. Dr. Sears was an education and career consultant who specialized in career counseling, program design, grant writing, and leadership development. She was a professor in counselor education at The Ohio State University for twenty-five years, an Associate Dean at the OSU's College of Education, and has published books and articles focusing on career development of college students, program development, and school and college counseling. Dr. Sears was instrumental in writing and pushing to get passed the legislation that created the regulation of licensed counselors, clinical counselors, and social workers in the State of Ohio. She served as the first chair of The Ohio Counselor and Social Worker Board (appointed by then Ohio Governor Richard Celeste) and continued as a member of the Board from November 1984 until January 1990. Before becoming the first Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor in Ohio, Dr. Sears taught Social Studies and was a Counselor in the Columbus, Gahanna, Zanesville, and Maysville Public Schools. In 1986, she was the recipient of the "Governor's Special Recognition Award for Leadership", and received numerous national and state awards for her service and leadership. Mrs Harper was born in Muskingum County, Ohio Eileen Harper, age 88 of Ashland, OH., passed away Sunday, March 04, 2012 at Samaritan Regional Health System Hospital. On April 14, 1923 in Bolivar, OH., Mrs. Harper was born to George and Ruth (Blair) Kreis. She had been a resident of Ashland most of her life working as a clerk for over 50 years in retail and grocery retail. She was a member of Emmanuel United Methodist Church and involved with the church alter guild. For over 40 years Mrs. Harper volunteered at Samaritan Hospital. On June 17, 1951 Eileen married Eugene Harold Harper who preceded her in death December 29, 1968. Mrs. Harper is survived by a daughter, Kay Lamm of Boynton Beach, FL.; one brother, Wayne Kreis of Ashland; one sister, Carolyn Lowe of Ashland; sister-in-law, Diane Kreis of Groton, Vermont; 14 nieces and nephews; 26 great-nieces and nephews; and 34 great-great-nieces and nephews. Mrs. Harper was preceded in death by her parents; son-in-law, Cal Lamm in 1979; brothers and spouses: Elmer and Maxine Kreis, Donald and Clara Kreis, Ward and Sis Kreis, and Richard “Dick” Kreis; sister-in-law, Marjorie Kreis; brother-in-law, Donald Lowe; niece, Carol Gessner; and 1 great-niece. Services will be held 10:00 AM Thursday, March 8, 2012 at Emmanuel United Methodist Church, 322 Cleveland Ave., Ashland, OH., with Pastor John Guliano officiating.
