Cynthia, I would highly recommend that you get your hands on a copy of volume 4 of /Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy/ by William Wade Hinshaw. It is available in many libraries, and most LDS family history centers have it on microfiche. It is also possible to buy a CD-ROM that has all six volumes, with a very nice index. Volume 4 covers eastern Ohio and western Pennsylvania, and includes, among others, records from the meetings in Morgan, Washington, and Belmont Counties. Many of the Deweeses were Quakers. According to my records, Owen Dewees who married Mary Lee in 1782 was son of Cornelius and Margaret (Richards) Dewees. This Cornelius Dewees was the son of Cornelius and Margaret (Ko:ster) Dewees. (In Ko:ster, the : should be above the o, but you can't do that in plain text!) The elder Cornelius Dewees was son of Gerret Hendricks and Zythian (Liuwes) Dewees who came from Holland to Germantown, Pennsylvania about 1680. Margaret was daughter of Johannes and Elizabeth (Kassel) Kuster who came from Germany. Johannes was son of Paulus and Gertrude (Streyper) Kuster. I believe these are also the ancestors of General George Armstrong Custer of Civil War and Little Big Horn fame. Elizabeth was daughter of Johannes and Elizabeth Kassel. Margaret Richards was daughter of William and Elizabeth Richards. William was son of Owen Richards. Another Cornelius Dewees was brother of your Owen. He married Sarah Paine on (again according to my notes) at Saint Gabriel's church in Douglasville, Pennsylvania, on 31 Jul 1774. (Not a Quaker wedding!) Their son Thomas, born in 1780, is my ancestor. Thomas married Jane Watson on 12 Jan 1804 at Bellefonte, Pennsylvania, and they moved (I would guess about 1811) to Belmont County, Ohio, where the births their last eight children are recorded in the records of Stillwater Monthly Meeting of Friends (Quakers). Evidently there were five older children, for a total of 13. Several of this brood moved to Morgan County. Another Cornelius Dewees, born 23 or 25 Oct 1821, died 14 Mar 1901, was married 21 Oct 1847 at Plainfield Meeting, Belmont County, Ohio, to Rebecca W Askew. I believe they are both buried at the Quaker cemetery in Chesterhill. This Cornelius was son of William and Deborah (Hoopes) Dewees. This William, born about 1782, died 22 Jan 1850, was son of Cornelius and Sarah (Paine) Dewees. William and Debby were married on 12 Dec 1810 at East Caln Meeting, Chester County, Pennsylvania. --- Dan Treadway postal: P. O.
