Hi fellow listers - It's good to read this exchange about the Morgan County Probate Court, and I'm hoping you might help me overcome the brick wall I've encountered in trying to get information from them. I have two ancestors who might have records stored there and have written a letter for each including SASE (dated 12/2/1999 and 4/10/2000 respectively) and done a follow-up phone call and letter on the 12/1999 letter (4/21/2000). I have had absolutely no response, and am hoping my Morgan County researchers can offer some suggestions. This is the information I'm seeking: 27 Feb 1823 Morgan County Marriage Record for William GIBSON (place of birth Unknown - Ohio?; father and mother of groom Unknown) and Nancy NICHOLS (place of birth - W. VA?; father of bride Unknown/Henry NICKELS b. VA abt 1765, d. aft 1850 OH?; mother of bride Unknown/Rachel GLASSCOE? b. VA abt 1775, d. aft 1850?). This marriage is listed on Family Tree Maker CD#400 - Ohio Marriages, with reference to LDS in Salt Lake City, UT - Film 0910657. Possible Morgan County Marriage Record (1844-1849) for Noah Adam AXLINE (b. 5 Nov 1823, Loudoun Co. VA; father of groom - John AXLINE b. 1791-2, Loudoun Co., VA; mother of groom - Christianna BAKER b. 13 Oct 1790, Lourdoun Co., VA.) and Lucinda Catherine GIBSON (b. 13 Oct 1790, Loudoun Co. VA; father of bride - William GIBSON place of birth Unknown - Ohio?; mother of bride - Nancy NICHOLS place of birth - W. VA?;) I've searched surrounding counties for a record of the marriage between my 2nd great-grandparents, Noah AXLINE and Lucinda GIBSON, and have found nothing. One of the references I have says Noah AXLINE married Lucinda GIBSON, daughter of "William GIBSON of Morgan County", which is why I've written the Morgan County Probate Court regarding a record of their marriage sometime between 1844-1849. Have any of my fellow Morgan County researchers gotten a response when writing the Morgan County Probate Court? I live in California and would appreciate any help you can give me. Thanks in advance - Nancy Thompson (California)
I'm sending this in general to the list so that we can all add here. I think this is a worthwhile discussion from which we can all benefit. First as to contacting the court directly my mail, I'm sorry but I haven't done this. I've visited in person and was directed to the top floor to look for myself. But I can shed a little light on marriage records. I have one of the in 1835 and parents weren't listed only bride, groom, date and the person marrying them. On looking at the source that you sited, this was a filming done of the marriage records of Morgan Co. (hint look at the source when you go to the http://www.familysearch.org when you find a record) The only other thing I believe that the actual record would state is who married them. Now as to your other marriage I didn't see it listed. There are several possibilities. If by chance they were married in Monroe Co, THAT courthouse did loose lots of records due to a fire. I'm missing documenting several marriages because of it. They could have also traveled into WV to marry. Also note:It seems that you may have the birthdate off on the bride however as I suspect that to be the birthdate of her father.
