This is a multi-part message in MIME format. --------------F651911EF05F365B397C816E Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit I can do it, because I'm an hours drive from the Family History Library in Salt Lake City. I know going rates around here are $50.00 an hour and I find that steep, in fact, very steep, but the big companies here charge that much. You could see from the posting Shannon (OUR WEB MASTER) put out yesterday, all of the Morgan County records that are on film. She did not include the land records in the Recorder's Office nor the military records in the same office. A lot of these records are in the university library where I work, because I HAVE PLACED THEM THERE FOR MY USE OR ANYONE ELSE THAT WANTS TO USE THEM, THE SAME AS YOU CAN PLACE THEM AT A FAMILY HISTORY CENTER NEAR YOU. The university has the entire US CENSUS from 1790 through 1920. Sorry folks there is no Ohio 1790-1800 or 1810 census. They have been lost. There is a 1798 for Hamiliton County and a 1803 & 1810 for Washington County. I have published those for Washington. Realize, in 1800, Washington County which today is Marietta on the Ohio River in Southeastern Ohio just up river from Parkersburg West Virginia, in 1800 Washington County included the land where Cleveland is today, but there was NO Cleveland at that time. That is another story. I know what I am doing when I get to Salt Lake City, but I don't get there that often. I can check quickly in my own library. I am President Emeritus of the Utah County Chapter of the Utah Genealogical Society, by 17 days YEA YEA YEA, and I have professional university graduate degrees in doing this kind of research, so I feel justified in charging $10 to $15 an hour. My colleagues would SCREAM at me, I know, but I look at it as trying to help, not trying to make a living. Realize what I said in that earlier posting, I have extremely time consuming responsibilities as a Father with our son and in fact I must go now. Good night. --------------F651911EF05F365B397C816E Content-Type: text/x-vcard; charset=us-ascii; name="kha.vcf" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Description: Card for Haybron Adams Content-Disposition: attachment; filename="kha.vcf" begin:vcard n:Adams;Mr. K. 3. I noticed that someone was interested in a paid researcher and I replied by sending my brother's name and E-mail because he does research for a living. I wasn't even thinking that someone might not like this information on the mailing list. I wasn't trying to advertise. I was just trying to help. I'm sorry I got off the topic of my ancestors. I am researching a William Davis and Hannah Appleton who married in Maine; moved to Ohio perhaps in early 1800's where they raised a large family and had many descendants. Anyone connect? 3. When I put in Margaret Needham I get a record of IGI: Marriage records, 1819-1923; marriage license index, 1840-1867 Ohio. Probate Court (Morgan County) . Her marriage to Thomas McClintock. But when I put in Thomas McClintock in I get an ancestral File match which is not the same Thomas McClintock. I have tried all variations of McClintock but don't come up with the same record as I get when putting in her name. I wonder if some of these marriage records are only listed under one of the persons being married rather than both names. If so, and if you don't know both parties are you will be out of luck. 1. [OHMORGAN-L] Sources of Information
    2. Wayne Smith
    3. I have been reading the comments about sources of information and decided to add my perspective. I use compiled data of all sorts as just a guide to look elsewhere for other sources of information. Many times though the original data has errors as well. When I first started research I found that fact very frustrating, but finally realized - that is really just a fact of life! At that point I decided to do my research as a biography and record ALL the data that I have found. I believe that if I choose one of the sources of information as the real facts, when the sources differ, that I will just be perpetuating errors into the future. I now have three volumes of about 600 pages each in a biography, storybook format. I find the research to be a whole lot more meaningful with more depth and I don't worry about what is the real fact or date of some event. Many times certain facts are not proveable beyond the various sources of information anyway. When my children were young they used to ask, why do I read about all of those dead people. Those comments prompted me more recently to update the biographies right up to the present time including photographs. I had originally started the research to pass on to my descendents a compiled family history. I believe that other researchers are the real benefactors of our research, so it is always good to share the information. I will pass on a couple of bizarre findings. While searching through a large database of one of my ancestors, I found that the file was full of mistakes including errors that I knew first hand to be erroneous. I decided to take the time and repeat their research to see if I could find how that person came to those conclusions of names and dates. I concluded that the person wanted to believe the easy findings because of the difficulty in sorting out the details of that particular family. The clues were everwhere that the data was not correct. I once got a state death certificate that had all the vital information, but upon further research I found that the person was not buried in the cemetery indicated on the death certificate. I assume that other researchers have similar findings. I will conclude now and face another snowy day in New Mexico. Wayne

    2. Are there indexes of any Morgan County cemeteries? There aren't any listed in the Morgan County Genealogical Societies list of publications. I hate to admit this but a number of years ago I spent much time in various Morgan County cemeteries copying down names and dates, but never what cemetery let alone a specific location in the cemetery. 3. I have a question about the LDS web site. Does anyone know why if you know both husband and wife names in the marriage record it will not have a record for both names? When I type in my GGG grandfather's name, who was a resident of Morgan Co., OH, I don't get a record. But when I type in my GGG grandmother's name, who was also a resident of Morgan Co., OH, I get a record. Am researching McClintock/McClintick, Needham in Morgan Co., Ohio.

    3. I thought perhaps these Batch numbers would be of some assistance - they are for the Morgan Co. Marriage Records listed on the LDS website. For 1819-1860 (Vol. A-C) - Batch M514081 For 1860-1878 (Vol. D-E) - Batch M514082 For 1878-1885 (Vol. F-G) - Batch M514083 I also have the Batch #'s for other OH counties if anyone neds them. I also wanted to add that I have been to the Morgan Co. Courthouse - while I did all of my searching on my own, the employees were very nice about making copies for me. Hope this helps someone! 3. This is a multi-part message in MIME format. --------------5744A778DD8078AB3B565C0F Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit The LDS Church does not check, repeat DOES NOT check any of the records that are submitted to the ancestral file. Those are the responsibility of the person submitting them which can be an individual; a family meaning all the siblings of a couple; or a family organization composed of thousands of descendants of a 18th century marriage. Neither does the Church check all the records in the IGI if, AND I AGAIN REPEAT IF, they are submitted by a person. They can only be submitted by a person to the IGI, not an organization or all the siblings, although several people or an intire family organization may have work on the different branches of a family, they are still submitted under one person's name.. THIS IS IN CAPS TO DRAW ATTENTION TO IT AND TO EMPHASIZE IT, IF, IF, THE ITEM IS EXTRACTED FROM AN ORIGINAL RECORD MEANING A BIRTH RECORD OR A MARRIAGE RECORD OR A CHURCH CHRISTENING RECORD OR ANY SIMILAR RECORD THEN THAT RECORD IS CHECKED AND RECHECKED AND IF A CONFLICT IS FOUND, THEN IT IS RECHECKED A THIRD OR FOURTH TIME TO GET IT RESOLVED FROM THE ORIGINAL RECORD. Dawn Finley made this comment BELOW & she is 150% correct, the LDS Church records submitted by people from all over the earth have errors in them. Those records are sent to us by people from all over the earth, especially people who want their life's work saved somewhere. Many of us have children who could care less UNFORTUNATELY about what we have spent a lot of time doing, but some day they may want to know and the records will be on the Ancestral file for them to look at. It goes without saying that a lot of us do a lot of things in our lives, restore cars, restore homes and buildings, involved in animal rights, or civil rights, or teachers or professors, writers, home makers, MOTHERS, the small jobs that have to be done to make the world a better place to live in, such as farming, electrical workers, water rights, and in this world there are a lot of slaves, and mis-treated children in every nation on earth, mis-treated human beings and animals, but those are the legacy we leave the next generation. Some of us spend time looking for this genealogical information and that is the legacy we can leave our grandchildren and great grandchildren. Finally, I must not overlook, FATHERS. I am the father of eight, great children. The youngest is now 12 and fights for his right to live with every breath he takes. He is terminally ill, I know, he know it, all of his siblings know it, but the most important thing we leave is our descendants we the MOTHERS AND FATHERS in this world. Where is Buckeye land do you hale from Dawn? 3. One word about the Mormon records, they are a great place to get leads but never take all the information as the God's truth as I have found errors in them after checking 2 or 3 more sources. One family I have had an extra child in it in the Mormon files but after much research I found that that child was not a child of that family at all. Never take just one source before leaving it and saying "OK" I have found that now move one. Even death records, birth records and others need to be verified from more than one source. I have found this out in my 25 years of researching. I did not mean to stir up a bee's nest only saw messages which were bashing researchers in Morgan Co. and thought that everyone might not know the situation there. All those who have done work there are to be commended for all there hard work. Thanks for all the comments and I have learned somethings which I did not know. 3. My thanks to everyone who contributed to this discussion about Morgan Co., have learned alot .I have found that even if my research leads me down the wrong path,I still have learned something about someone, something. It then becomes my responsibility to pass that something along. I may have just come across the one thing someone else has searched for for years & couldn't find.Knowing what I know now about the difficult job one person has,I will be even more faithful to pass on the little nuggets I find.
