    2. Sally Holden Dyson
    3. Hello list members! I am doing research on a Gaston family that lived in the Belmont/Morgan/Athens Co., OHIO area in the early to mid-1800's. I'm trying to find the parents to my gg-grandfather, Ephraim Gaston. He was born in 1822 in Ohio and died August 30, 1858 in Athens Co. He married Elizabeth Young (b 1826 OH, d. January 2, 1903) in 1843 in Morgan Co. She married (2) William Howard in 1861. Ephraim & Elizabeth has six children: Susan, James W., Zadock, David Y., Angeline, and Joseph B. (*my g-grandfather). There was a Dr. Ephraim Gaston (b. 1799) living in Belmont Co. but he is not the father of my Ephraim--it's possible that one of his brother's is--the two I suspect are: John Perry Gaston (b. April 24, 1793) and Robert Gaston (b. January 17, 1797). These 3 brothers (along with many other sibs) are the children of Dr. Alexander Gaston (b. 1769) who also lived in Belmont Co. I would appreciate any help anyone can give.... TIA Sally Holden Dyson longtalsally@home.com Researching: Holden, Sabin, Gaston, German, Frost, Young and many others

The data is supported by a variety of sources that will be found in greater detail in "Patrick Archer and His Descendants," an online document to appear on a homepage to be announced. In the meantime contact me (below-tag line) for more information. Broad, sweeping guideline: IF YOUR ARCHERS WERE PROTESTANT BEFORE 1800, THIS IS NOT YOUR ARCHER LINE. (unknown) Patrick's Irish origins and ancestry remains unknown. Oral tradition records Patrick's arrival in America with a brother (name unknown) who settled in the Baltimore, MD area. Patrick first appears in America in 1759 in Frederick Co., MD court records as a debtor and last appears in 1793 as a witness to a deed by his son James in 1793 in Washington Co., PA. Patrick was a staunch Irish Catholic, and his children married German or Irish Catholics. This makes this family unique in being the only pre-Revolutionary Archer family that was Catholic thereby making it easier to identify them and to differentiate them from the two other Archer lines who were "Scotch-Irish" Protestants living in the same area of Greene/Washington Cos., PA. Patrick's children began marrying Protestants fairly early in the Second Generation the earliest being about 1806. The Catholic Archers today are concentrated mostly in Noble Co., OH being descendants of James (of Patrick) whereas the other descendant lines of Patrick are mostly Protestant. Children of Patrick: 1. James b. c. 1747; d. c. 1830. James and his father and siblings moved from Frederick Co., MD. to Washington (now Greene) Co., PA about 1772. James became the Captain of the local militia fighting Indians during the French-Indian War and remained in Greene Co., moving out to Ohio Co. (now Marshall Co., WV) VA by 1800. He and his family moved to Monroe (now Noble) Co., OH around 1815 and died there about 1830. Most of his descendants stayed in Noble Co., until the 1870's. James married twice: 1. Sophia (McClelland?) 2. (Mrs.?) Jane Lincicome. 2. Joseph b. c. 1755; d. 1822. He was a landowner in Washington Co., PA as early as 1774, after the family moved from Frederick Co., MD. He had considerable land and wealth accumulated by the time he sold out and moved to Guernsey Co., OH about 1802-1803. Two of his children married in Guernsey Co. in 1811 and 1812. After the Indians had been pacified, he and the family moved on to Richland Co., OH by 1820 where Joseph died in 1822. He md. Margaret Church, daughter of George Church (Kirche/Kirk), probably in Maryland before moving to Pennsylvania. About the time of his death, his descendants began to move Hancock and Wood counties, OH and Marion Co., IN by 1830. 3. Michael b. c. 1760; d. 1786. Little is known of him, as he was killed by Indians before 9 Sep 1786. After his death, his widow Elizabeth Wells, daughter of John Duckett Wells, moved with her brothers and two children, Mary and Joseph, to Tyler Co., (W) VA. where his descendants live to the present time. 4. Simon b. c. 1760; d. 1808. Simon moved out of Washington (Greene) Co., as soon as the Northwest Territory had been opened. He moved to Washington Co., PA between 1787 and 1790, appearing in the 1790 Census of Morgan Twp, Wasington Co, OH and died in Newport Twp, Washington Co., OH in 1808. He md. Nancy Church, daughter of George Church (Kirche/Kirk), and had two (Simon and Patrick) and possibly three (Jacob) sons. The sons remained until 1823 when they moved to Clay Co., IN. Simon md. Nancy Church. 5. Jacob b. c. 1765; d. c. 1825. Jacob's moved from Washington (Greene) Co., PA to Spencer Twp, Guernsey Co, OH about 1810 and died there about 1825. His wife is unknown. His descendants lived in Guernsey but some moved to Muskingum Co., in the 1820's and then moved eastward to Morgan Co., OH. They remained in the Morgan Co., area until Noble Co., was formed in 1851 when some remained within Morgan and others found themselves in Brookfield Twp, Noble Co., OH. By the 1900's descendants were in Noble Twp, Noble Co. Migrations of this line include Nemaha Co., KS (1878) 6. Elizabeth md. William Wells, son of John Duckett Wells. William died Jan-Jun 1835 in Tyler Co., WV. An Elizabeth Wells (wife of William?) in her will proven 22 Dec 1823, Greene Co., PA, mentioned one, unnamed, child. Elizabeth and John Wells granted letters of administration but their relationship to Elizabeth is not known. Other direct descendants are not known, as William's will does not list any children. 7. Mary or Polly 8. Nancy One of the two girls married George Fee who lived in Washington Co., PA until after 1790 when he moved to Mason Co. KY. No further information. Oddly enough throughout the 200 year period of migrations and intermarriages, none of the male descendants of Patrick married descedants of the other male descendants of Patrick. Intermarriages did occur in the 20th century through extended in-law connections between two of Patrick's descendant lines of Jacob and James. Migrations of James (of Patrick)'s descendants before the Civil War were limited to Iowa and Nebraska by 1836 and Franklin Co., Kansas (1859). After the Civil War migrations of James (of Patrick)'s line were extensive: Wood and Jackson, and Wirt Cos., WV (1870's); Swift Co., Minnesota (1878) and South Dakota 1880's); Seward Co., NE (1878); and many counties in Kansas: Anderson (1870); Cloud (1872); Harvey (1872), Sheridan (1879); Norton Co., (1879); Marion (1880); Mitchel (1886); Franklin (1890); Washington (1891); Cowley (1900). 1. [OHMORGAN-L] William Ansell George's heritage
    2. Michael S. Beckley
    3. My great grandfather William Ansell George was born to Isaac George and Mary Funk George around 1869, in Jackson Twp, Vinton County, Ohio. He eventually married a Sarah Brown in 1898, who may have been the daughter of T.J. and Mary A. Brown of Falls Twp, Hocking County, Ohio. Mary Funk was born in 1839, probably in Falls Twp, Hocking County, Ohio. She may have been the child of Joseph Funk and Sarah Miller, who had married in Muskingham County, Ohio, in 1822. Isaac George had been widowed by Catharine Rose George earlier in the 1860's. They had resided in Perry County, Ohio during the 1840 census. They were married in Morgan County, Ohio in 1833. I'm trying to trace the Ansell family connection, assuming it's the maiden name of someone's mother(that is redundant, isn't it?). If something looks familiar, please e-mail me at msb@core.com, thanks, Mike Beckley
