I plan to go to Morgan County this summer to do research. What facilities are there in Morgan County? I want to verify that the Thomas Morris that married Seleany Longfellow was my great great grandfather. To do that I need to locate the grave of Seleany and one child. Seleany Longfellow married Thomas Morris on the same day that a Rachael Morris married a Dearborn Longfellow. This was in the 1830s. What was the industry in Morgan County in the early 1800s? Does anyone know if there has been a reprint of the book "History of Morgan County"? I read parts of it at the Library of Congress. The book was printed after the civil war so it is turning to dust. Are there any hotels or motels in the area? Thanks for any assistance, Corlee Ann Morris San Diego, California

That did not mean that had to be married in that county, however. Since Beverly is so close to the Washington & Morgan county line, just to preclude it, I checked the marriages of Morgan County from 1878-1898 and there is no marriage for a James Phillips or Philips, although there is a large Phillis family in Morgan County. I also checked Robertson's History of Morgan County and the 1980 history published by the Morgan County Historical Society and there is no James Phillips listed that relates to the information you provided below. The Harris family is Quaker. There is a large Harris family in Belmont County, therefore, have you checked the Quaker records for Belmont County? If they were married under the rules of the Society of Friends (Quaker) then there will not be a record in the county court house as the Society of Friends do not believe in recording them in that manner. You would have to check the minutes of the Monthly Meeting where they resided. The largest Monthly Meeting in Morgan County would have been Chesterhill Monthly Meeting. The minutes of the Chesterhill Monthly Meeting were found intermixed with the minutes of a Monthly Meeting of a town in New York. They had been turned in to the repository in Pennsylvania. HOWEVER, I DO NOT KNOW THAT THE PHILLIPS FAMILY WAS A QUAKER FAMILY. I hope that gives you some leads. Jack Phillips wrote: > James S. URGENT REQUEST!: Now that we are over the holidays, This years is our 350th Anniversary of the landing of the Swartwout family in North America. The name has many variations such as Swarthout, Swartout, Swartwood, Swathwood, Swarthwood etc. We need help in gather lines, pictures, articles, wills, what ever you have stashed in your attic. We would really appreciated it if you shared with us what you had, there a literally thousands of us here looking for our roots, looking for connections. For our 350th Anniversary we need to updated our list of folks out there that are descendants somewhere along the line of any of those variations. We also have a family newsletter that cost only $5.00 per year, a real bargain. Just send it your mailing address. Every day I get e-mail asking me for help. Up here in Canada, there were two brothers that had huge families, all the remains of their descendants are the female sides. All the male went back to the States. I'm am the maintainer of "The Updated Swartwout Chronicles" People submit their lines-ged-coms etc. and I just drop them into the data base. It is everyone's database. Each person is responsible for their own submissions. It is not copyrighted. Kathy kathyhoeldke@sympatico.ca ldyk@hotmail.ca
I am unsubbing after this e-mail. Yes, this is a genealogy list, and maybe that person didn't know what was allowed. I was being nice by saying "Thank You". Sometimes we forget that there are elders, and "newbie's . I was out of line with my "Thank You" to Haybron, for that I am sorry. Ray, I thought "genealogist" were nice! I hope you didn't send Haybron an e-mail that was as cold in content as mine was. Thank you for allowing me to be on the list. I will look for my Morgan County Relatives in another way. Happy Holidays! Gloria
Thanks for passing it on! I enjoyed it! Gloria ----- Original Message ----- From: Haybron Adams To: OHMORGAN-L@rootsweb.com Good morning; I have viewed the White House at Christmas on line. I highly recommend you look at it. You may be --in alphabetical order-- Democrat, Green Party, Independent, Libertarian, or Republican but this is a cite you need to look at. The white house is beautiful on line. If it all works correctly, click on my hot link below. ONE VERY IMPORTANT THING. This cite takes over 1 minute to load and BEGIN TO OPERATE. The rooms are not just still pictures, but the camera revolves around the rooms in the white house. Also take the quiz and see how good you are at it. Also look at the link of the homes of the other presidents of the USA. Especially, the Adams home in Quincy, Mass. That is pronounced Quinzee. Remember, allow it to load and also choose all the rooms. The rooms are listed and located at the bottom of the picture when you load the cite. You really need to look at all the rooms and all the links. USE IT. www.whitehouse.gov
Please let's not get a discussion going here about what is and what is not genealogy. This creates more problems than the occasional slips about what should and should not be posted to the list. Also, if you subscribe from one email address, you have to use that address to send messages OR it bounces to me and no one else but me sees it. AND please, people, try to unsubscribe when you change email addresses. All these end up in my mailbox as bounces (along with the spam that rootsweb so graciously catches for the list.) My RULES are simple for the list: 1)Please post material of a genealogical nature. 2)NO flaming of ANY kind will be tolerated. If you have ANY questions about what should be posted, send to me. If you have ANY problems about the list, send them to me PERSONALLY, not the list. There are several ways you can REACH ME. My home email is shanroy@bellsouth.net; My mailbox for just Morgan Co is morgan@shannonsminis.com; and you can reach ANY list administrator by adding -admin after the name. So for the Morgan list it's OHMORGAN-admin@rootsweb.com Thanks so much, now let's get back to genealogy. Happy hunting! Does anyone have any information on William Barnes or his widow, Alice Ann Thompson (Barnes) (O'Daniel)? His DOB is unknown but he married Alice Ann Thompson sometime prior to the birth of their daughter Ethel Mae Barnes b. 07/12/1885, he was a Union veteran, was killed in an accident soon after the birth of Wilbert b. 3/11/1890. Alice remarried a few years later to a Mr. O'Daniel and moved to Kansas. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Melinda Pickering
For those doing research on Noble/Monroe Cos., OH, I've put up some files that may be of interest that will help you uncover specific ARCHER surnamed persons and/or locate records of interest. 1. http://www.archercousins.com/ArcherAssn/mba.htm CHARACTER SKETCHES of Some Families in Noble County, Ohio by M.B. Archer These are unpublished pages from "The Genealogical History of the Archer Family" by M.B. Archer, F.J. Heer & Co., Columbus, 1919. Mrs. J. Allen Wheat of Aiken, SC, Martin B. Archer's niece, provided me the material that I published in "The Archer Quarterly" (now out of print). The narratives are very colorful and personal and are not necessarily limited to an ARCHER surname interest. Martin Archer also quotes from his historical novelette, "Christina" (named after Christina Crow), serialized weekly in the "Caldwell Press" from 2 March through 22 June 1910. He also comments on the origin of local slang names for place names in Stock Twp. not published anywhere else in Noble Co., OH literature. Families/persons described by Martin Archer: ARCHER (too numerous to list here) BARNES, Peter BURTON, Shedrick CROW, Christina, Jacob ENOCHS, Enoch, Henry GRANDON, Enoch McBRIDE, John MORRIS, Archibald, Cynthia (Archibald's dau.), Isaac STONE, John WOLF, Solomon YOUNG, William 2. http://www.archercousins.com/ArcherAssn/churches.htm CATHOLIC CHURCH RECORDS IN MONROE AND NOBLE COUNTIES, OHIO Contents: Catholic Church History and Development in Monroe and Noble Counties a. In the 1830/40 census for Bloom Twp.,Morgan Co. there is a Thomas Hopper. In the 1850 census his name was written in the german manner using the sign for "double"..This made his name appear as if it might be Thomas Harper.I searched for along time for Harper before I actually saw the census myself & realized my error.... Looking for information on a Sarah Jane PHILIS ATKINSON that later married a SCHENECK, most likely in the Franklin County, Ohio area. Sarah was born in Morgan County, the daughter of James M. Phillis, married to James Arkinson/Atkinson. She died in either 1917 or 1918. I found a Sarah J Scheneck, age 65, Warren, Franklin County, Ohio in the 1910 census, living alone. My Sarah was born in 1842. Does any one recognize her? Byron
Glad to see some action on the list. I'm going to throw out one of my Morgan families and see if any of you can add to the mix. They lived for the most part in the area that became Noble Co. Samuel HALLEY (1783-1844) and Sarah WARTENBE (1789-1841) were married about 1811 location unknown. Samuel served in the war of 1812. They had : 1) William (1813-1864) married Debra BOND in 1833; had Mary, Samuel, John, Wm, Eliza, Lucy 2) Emily (b 1815-1820) married a DENNIS had Sarah, Samuel, David, Susannah 3) John may have married Mary SHANNON and had at least James 4) Samuel Jr (-1845) no issue 5) Nathaniel (1815-?) married Talitha LUKENS in Morgan Co 15 jan 1835, moved to Defiance Co and then Iowa had Levi G [my line], Sarah, Joseph W, Mary J, Martha, Elnora 6) Susan(1816-1842) married Andrew CRAMBLET; had William, John, Samuel, Sarah Ann. and 7) Joseph (1823-1844) no issue As you can see 1841-45 were tough years for the family I'd love to hear from anyone connected with this family or other Halleys in the area. It looks as tho we share the same Mordecai (Margaret Jackson) Harper line, then we drift to their son Gideon (brother of your James, three years younger), which is where we lose detail. I have Gideon married, possibly twice....once to a Rhoda ???, and then to Lydia Welsh. These are the parents of my GrGr-Grandfather. His name was Cashius Carlton Harper and I know he had siblings, but this is where our information becomes sketchy. Cashius' wife and children seem to be cloudy as well. If you know anything, would appreciate any leads........... THANX, Terri PS: I'm certain Bruce has different questions, but we are distant cousins of this same line, so thanx for all help. _______________________ Outgoing mail is checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com).
