It has been a while so I am reposting my search for information on any of the Work families of Morgan County who may be related to John, David or Robert Work born in the early 1800's . I am searching for a connection to the possibility that one of these may be the Father of my GGGgrandmother Sarah Ann Work Eveland. Sarah Ann was born around Morgan or Belmont County in about 1824. She married John Eveland who was also from Morgan County on March 14, 1845, in Morgan County. They left Morgan County after the 1850 census and moved into Hocking County, Ohio. Any one who have connections to any of these Work lines and can give me any information at all would be greatly appreciated. There is no death record for Sarah Ann Work Eveland so I am at a stand still in finding who her parents may have been. I would like to welcome those of you new to this site and tell you there are some really great folks who are willing to help just for the asking. I, myself do Volunteer research at Andersonville Civil War Prison in Andersonville Georgia. There are Any research I do is absolutely at NO cost and I am willing to do what I can. There are 3857 prisoners on record from the state of Ohio and more than 1100 who died here, I thought I would send my offer. Here are my sources of research. There are 2 online databases to do lookups.....One by name...one by Company and Regiment. I also have a copy of the Dorence Atwater Death list which has the names and grave numbers of 12960 graves with only 460 marked as " UNKNOWN " This along with a CD I have which contains 34,000 names of the 45,000 who were imprisoned there which helps me find prisoner records because of misspellings of the names or alternate names. I visit the prison site every couple of weeks and have access to the onsite databases as well as the physical files. I would like to let you know of another service I offer which is to take photos of graves for a small fee. Please do not concider this spam as my research offer is FREE for the asking ad will be posted on this county site only once. If there is anything I can do in helping your research at Andersonville, please just ask. Hello, I am doing research on diners/lunch wagons. My research has brought me to Silver Creek, NY(Ward & Dickinson dining car co) which in turn has brought me to focus on Ohio. They sent many of their diners to Ohio. Some Diner builders in Ohio: Galion dining car co. of Galion, OH and the (Earl Richardson)Rich dining car co. of Dayton, OH, both of these Ohio companies were probably short lived ventures in the 1920's. What I am looking for is any information on past diners in Ohio or these companies(Maybe your relatives worked at/owned these diners or companies) and also, leads on any diners that existed(past or present) in Ohio, as I am only aware of about 10-15 diners in the state. For example, a friend of mine JUST recently heard about a diner in Wellington, OH that has been there since probably 1925. Not only do they have a good breakfast(had to drive out there from eastern NY to check it out!) but it's a type of diner we've never seen before. Since I'm doing my research from a mostly historical standpoint, if you remember a diner "a long time ago" in a certain location, please let me know. Best Regards, Mike Engle speigletown@hotmail.com http://www.nydiners.2ya.com/ To see what information I have collected so far about some Ohio diners, check here: http://www.geocities.com/cornwallace55/ohio.html _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp.

Hello, My name is Laurie Whitney Skillern and I have been trying to find information on my Great grandfather William Whitney b. 1821 Oh. He married 1841 in Athens County. There were no Whitney's living in Athens Co. in 1840. I have reason to believe he was a grandson of either Jonathan Whitney of Washington Co/Morgan Co or of James Whitney of Washington County. Both are listed in Washington County before 1820. According to the 1880 census William's father was said to be from Mass and mother from Ohio. Not much is know of the descendants of either Jonathan or James. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Laurie whiski@centurytel.net

Cynthia, I would highly recommend that you get your hands on a copy of volume 4 of /Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy/ by William Wade Hinshaw. It is available in many libraries, and most LDS family history centers have it on microfiche. It is also possible to buy a CD-ROM that has all six volumes, with a very nice index. Volume 4 covers eastern Ohio and western Pennsylvania, and includes, among others, records from the meetings in Morgan, Washington, and Belmont Counties. Many of the Deweeses were Quakers. According to my records, Owen Dewees who married Mary Lee in 1782 was son of Cornelius and Margaret (Richards) Dewees. This Cornelius Dewees was the son of Cornelius and Margaret (Ko:ster) Dewees. (In Ko:ster, the : should be above the o, but you can't do that in plain text!) The elder Cornelius Dewees was son of Gerret Hendricks and Zythian (Liuwes) Dewees who came from Holland to Germantown, Pennsylvania about 1680. Margaret was daughter of Johannes and Elizabeth (Kassel) Kuster who came from Germany. Johannes was son of Paulus and Gertrude (Streyper) Kuster. I believe these are also the ancestors of General George Armstrong Custer of Civil War and Little Big Horn fame. Elizabeth was daughter of Johannes and Elizabeth Kassel. Margaret Richards was daughter of William and Elizabeth Richards. William was son of Owen Richards. Another Cornelius Dewees was brother of your Owen. He married Sarah Paine on (again according to my notes) at Saint Gabriel's church in Douglasville, Pennsylvania, on 31 Jul 1774. (Not a Quaker wedding!) Their son Thomas, born in 1780, is my ancestor. Thomas married Jane Watson on 12 Jan 1804 at Bellefonte, Pennsylvania, and they moved (I would guess about 1811) to Belmont County, Ohio, where the births their last eight children are recorded in the records of Stillwater Monthly Meeting of Friends (Quakers). Evidently there were five older children, for a total of 13. Several of this brood moved to Morgan County. Another Cornelius Dewees, born 23 or 25 Oct 1821, died 14 Mar 1901, was married 21 Oct 1847 at Plainfield Meeting, Belmont County, Ohio, to Rebecca W Askew. I believe they are both buried at the Quaker cemetery in Chesterhill. This Cornelius was son of William and Deborah (Hoopes) Dewees. This William, born about 1782, died 22 Jan 1850, was son of Cornelius and Sarah (Paine) Dewees. William and Debby were married on 12 Dec 1810 at East Caln Meeting, Chester County, Pennsylvania. --- Dan Treadway postal: P. O. I'm researching my Grimes line. My 4th great grandparents were Hannah Deweese and Benjamin Grimes. Benjamin was born about 1787 and died before 1850. Hannah was born 24 June 1791 in Northumberland, Pennsylvania. After Benjamin's death, she was living with Owen 23, Samuel 18, Esther 17 and Hannah 14. Hannah's son, John, who was living next door, married Elizabeth A. Mercer, 23 May 1849. Joanna, my 3rd great grandmother, was already married to Abner Lewis since 29 May 1842. Owen had married Delilah Roland on 5 March 1846, but she wasn't on the 1850 census with him. I don't have anything on Samuel, Esther or Hannah, except for their approximate years of birth from the 1850 census record. Are there any Grimes researchers with information on this line? I know who Hannah's parents were (Owen Deweese and Mary Lee), but I don't have anything about Benjamin's parents. Also, does anyone know who Cornelius Dewees, born 1822 in Ohio (wife Rebecca born 1817 Ohio and daughter Clarissa born 1850) and Delby Dewees, born 1789 Pennsylvania (son William R. born 1825, daughter Deborah born 1829, grandson William Jr. born 1842 and Griffith Dewees born 1831) were? They were living next door to each other in 1850. I'm figuring they were father and son, and I wonder how Delby is connected to Hannah (Deweese) Grimes. Hannah had 12 siblings, and Delby wasn't one of them. Hannah's grandfather was Cornelius Deweese, so I'm sure there's a connection. Any information would be appreciated. Cynthia
I'm researching my 4th great grandparents, Jonathan Lewis and Nancy Randolph. They were married in Belmont County on 22 July 1817. They were in Belmont County, Richard township, in 1820, Washington County, Roxbury township, in 1830 and 1840 and Morgan County, Marion township, in 1850 and 1851. I haven't yet found them in 1860, but they were in Athens County, Canaan township, in 1870. Jonathan named only 5 sons in his will: Abner (my 3rd great grandfather), Jacob, David, Abraham and Orson, yet he had more children. I found Jonathan Jr. in Jonathan's household in 1850. He was born in 1832. And I found Isaac R. next door to John and Nancy. He had a 4 year-old son named Jonathan, so I'm sure he was also a son. And on the other side of Jonathan and Nancy were Eli and Evaline Harris. I'm certain Evaline was a daughter. Jonathan's granddaughter, Nancy, my 2nd great grandmother, named one of her daughters Evaline. They also had a son named Jonathan. Over in Roxbury township in Washington County was Valentine Lewis, a blacksmith (as was Abner), who had a son named Jonathan. Orson also had a son named Valentine, so I know this Valentine is connected, most likely a son. I don't have any information on Jacob other than his name on Jonathan's will. I'd like to find out what happened to the other children and find names of those I'm missing. He had 12 children in 1840, and I'm missing three. I'm puzzled that he only mentioned the 5 sons in his will and didn't mention the other sons or daughters. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Cynthia

My Sierra Generations software and the Family Archive Viewer are not compatible. IM going to use my old computer to access the VA genealogies CD. I should be setup by this week to do lookups from the CD. I will let you all know as soon as my hubby gets another computer desk moved in here. I found this newspaper article while looking through the Kansas American, McPherson, Kansas, dated Thurs., August 12, 1903: Capt. W. L. Fouts. Among the many old soldiers of this county there are scarely any that can show a better military record than Capt. W. L. Fouts, of this place. Enlisted May 24th, 1861, mustered out June 18, 1866 over five years continious service. He has a sash that he wore during the war which has three bullets holes in it. He has a trunk full of papers showing the standing of every man who served in his company. He also has every written order and command received by him from superior officers during the war. The following is the Military record of Capt. Fouts, taken from the records: W.L. Fouts, Capt. Co. K. 25 Reg. Ohio Veteran Vol. Inf enlisted in Co. H Vol. Inf. Enlisted at McConnelsville, Ohio, May 24th, 1861 for 3 yrs. Born in Morgan County, Ohio. Is 20 years of age, 5 feet nine inches in height, fair complexion, blue eyes, by occupation a carpenter. Honorable discharged at Columbus, Ohio, June 18, 1866. on account of muster out of regiment. Signed by Nat. Haughton, Lieut. Co. and Big. Gen Inf. and H. Douglas both Maj. and Captain..
