<PRE>Yes, Polly is very often used for Mary and I can't figure out why. I have it in my family every where. Perhaps the same as Peggy for Margaret, Dick for Richard. Somewhere I have a page of possible nicknames, but can't put my finger on it now as not at my home. Good luck with your family. You do know that sometimes in the olden days, particularly amongst the Quakers people often married someone with the same last name although not very closely related. Not a lot to choose from in some communities. I noticed in my Quaker families that a lot of the girls never marry-not enough men or what. Jerilyn
I have about 300 unprocessed messages in my "Inbox" so I decided I better delete a few before I am deleted! You said you were forwarding a response from Haybron Adams. I don't recall receiving that message. Yes, I know that Bennington County is in Vermont. At my age, my fingers are faster than my brain! I still have not located the "Valley...Church" records of Manchester Township. I still have not found any additional information on Mary Smith, daughter of Nathan and Rosanna Smith. Yes, I understand about getting married and changing names. But she signed her name on the Quit Claim Document in 1838 as "Mary Smith". While that may have been her legal time, with an older sister, "Mary Ann", I could see why she may have received a nickname and that is why I can not find her. Is "Polly" a common nickname for "Mary" like "Dewey" is for "Duane" and "Jack" is for "John"? Yes, I now about the Nathan Smith in Bloom Township. I have corresponded with one of his descendants. Spinning my wheels in Minnesota, MaryLu
My name is listed on the "volunteer look-up" page and I have a request - if you email me for a look-up *please* put "Morgan Co. death record" or "Death record look-up" in the subject line. I do not open email from unknown addresses that have no subject or an unclear subject. I would love to do look-ups for people & I'm sure that there have been many instances where I have deleted a request simply because of the subject line. Also, please specify the county (either in the subject line or in the body of the email) since I am listed on more sites than just Morgan Co., OH. Thanks- Kim Augustine

I'm forwarding this message from a non-subscriber. PLEASE send responses to this person privately as they may not get them otherwise. Send to mailto:eddie@mail.webzigns.com Thanks Shannon Moore list admin for OHMORGAN-L ------------------------------ From: Eddie Bernard <eddie@mail.webzigns.com> I am considering a trip to McConnelsville next month to do some research. Can anyone tell me if the Kate Love Simpson Library has newspaopers on microfilm (or other format) from the mid 1800s to modern times? I'm primarily interested in looking up obituaries. Thanks, Eddie Bernard
First off when I forward a message you can't hit reply. It comes back to me! Please direct mail to the list to OHMORGAN-L@rootsweb.com I don't want to appear cranky about this but it gets very confusing to me to have to read all the headers to make sure you all get the information. I didn't read carefully the second message that I forwarded. In the listing asking about records it was stated "I have been unable to locate the Manchester Township,Bennington County,OH, " Well there's no Bennington Co, OH that's in VT. Several of you have nicely replied to me about this fact, thanks. I'm sorry I didn't see it or I would have replied privately. And to the others that have asked, yes there is a Manchester twp in Morgan. Thus the confusion. Shannon Moore List admin.

This was sent to me, not the list so I'm forwarding it. Please reply to the list or to MaryLu as I have no connection to this Shannon ------- From: "MaryLu" <mmcclure@lakesplus.com> Does anyone know what ever happened to the records of the Valley Chapel Church of Manchester Township? I am searching for information on the family of Nathan (born 1771) and Rosanna Smith who were early settlers in Manchester Township. Their daughters, Mary Ann (Born 1801 in VT), Lucy (born 1808 - possibily named "Lucetta"), and Mahala (born 1810), were listed as early "young ladies who were active in the behalf of the church's perpetuation as a church structure..." I have been unable to locate the Manchester Township,Bennington County, OH, birth dates for the younger Smith children: Elizabeth Smith (who married Samuel Dye); Mary Smith (no further information found on her. Yes, according to estate records both Mary Ann (Smith) Maxwell and Mary Smith (Single) signed the Quit Claim Document.); Nancy Smith ( who went to Indiana with her widowed mother sometime after 1838); Martha Smith (who also left for Indiana); and Stephen A. Smith (who also went to Indiana, but no death date & place was found). Hoping that someone can direct me in the right direction, MaryLu in Minnesota

Nathan died in 1827, and is buried at the Brookfield Cemetery. Mary signed the Quit Claim Document with other family members on October 29, 1838. On Nathan's 1824 Will, it appears that the children are listed in the order of their birth. The name of Mary appears before Nancy Smith, who we believe was born in about 1820/21. So she was single and over age 18 when she signed the Quit Claim Document. Did she marry someone in Morgan County? Die in Morgan County? Or move on with her mother and younger siblings to Delaware County, IN? MaryLu in Minnesota
I am interested in finding where the church records of Jerusalem Lutheran Church in York Twp., Morgan County, Ohio are located. Also, an address where I could write to have the records checked regarding my family. Also, I am interested in knowing what years are covered in the records and what records are included - Baptisms, Marriages, Burials, Confirmations, etc. Any help anyone can give would be greatly appreciated. Hello. Could someone who has access to the 1850 Morgan Co census (film or printed version okay) look up the name Andrew MARTIN and tell me who was in the household and the names and ages of any children. I thought I had found "my" Andrew MARTIN in 1840 in Morgan, but he shows up in Seneca Co in 1850. Now I'm wondering if there is an Andrew MARTIN in 1850 Morgan Co, it may be the same one who was in the 1840 Morgan (I have that entry to compare sex and age groups of children in 1840) . Then I will have to track down "my" Andrew MARTIN in 1840-originally from Muskingum, but he had a brother who spent all his life in Morgan. Thanks for any help here. Dar at dhackle@ix.netcom.com
