    2. Hi List, Wayne's comment reminded me how that when I was in Tappahannock, VA the librarian, an admitted loather of genealogy because it was never done, just dumped any letters she got immediately in to the trash. When I was searching there for a while, she gave a few letters to me. I researched the requests to the best of my ability. When I stopped using the library, I assume that the letters returned to the trash again. It was unfortunate. Might I suggest the library? Somone, either in the Morgan Co library or the Washington Co library, was very kind to me and helped me to find my Morgan Co roots even though they were secondary. 3. I'm sending this in general to the list so that we can all add here. I think this is a worthwhile discussion from which we can all benefit. First as to contacting the court directly my mail, I'm sorry but I haven't done this. I've visited in person and was directed to the top floor to look for myself. But I can shed a little light on marriage records. I have one of the in 1835 and parents weren't listed only bride, groom, date and the person marrying them. On looking at the source that you sited, this was a filming done of the marriage records of Morgan Co. (hint look at the source when you go to the http://www.familysearch.org when you find a record) The only other thing I believe that the actual record would state is who married them. Now as to your other marriage I didn't see it listed. There are several possibilities. If by chance they were married in Monroe Co, THAT courthouse did loose lots of records due to a fire. I'm missing documenting several marriages because of it. They could have also traveled into WV to marry. Also note:It seems that you may have the birthdate off on the bride however as I suspect that to be the birthdate of her father. 3. In recent years I have not gotten any response even if I prepay the requests for information. The checks were never cashed so I imagine that correspondences were just deposited in the trash. I stopped at the courthouse on two visits to Ohio and found that many of the records are in large heavy books that are stored on the second floor and the attic. The copying machines are on the first floor. They probably have limited help and many requests for information.

    1. [OHMORGAN-L] Morgan Co. Courthouse
    2. Hi fellow listers - It's good to read this exchange about the Morgan County Probate Court, and I'm hoping you might help me overcome the brick wall I've encountered in trying to get information from them. I have two ancestors who might have records stored there and have written a letter for each including SASE (dated 12/2/1999 and 4/10/2000 respectively) and done a follow-up phone call and letter on the 12/1999 letter (4/21/2000). I have had absolutely no response, and am hoping my Morgan County researchers can offer some suggestions. This is the information I'm seeking: 27 Feb 1823 Morgan County Marriage Record for William GIBSON (place of birth Unknown - Ohio?; father and mother of groom Unknown) and Nancy NICHOLS (place of birth - W. VA?; father of bride Unknown/Henry NICKELS b. VA abt 1765, d. aft 1850 OH?; mother of bride Unknown/Rachel GLASSCOE? b. VA abt 1775, d. aft 1850?). This marriage is listed on Family Tree Maker CD#400 - Ohio Marriages, with reference to LDS in Salt Lake City, UT - Film 0910657. Possible Morgan County Marriage Record (1844-1849) for Noah Adam AXLINE (b. 5 Nov 1823, Loudoun Co. VA; father of groom - John AXLINE b. 1791-2, Loudoun Co., VA; mother of groom - Christianna BAKER b. 13 Oct 1790, Lourdoun Co., VA.) and Lucinda Catherine GIBSON (b. 13 Oct 1790, Loudoun Co. VA; father of bride - William GIBSON place of birth Unknown - Ohio?; mother of bride - Nancy NICHOLS place of birth - W. VA?;) I've searched surrounding counties for a record of the marriage between my 2nd great-grandparents, Noah AXLINE and Lucinda GIBSON, and have found nothing. One of the references I have says Noah AXLINE married Lucinda GIBSON, daughter of "William GIBSON of Morgan County", which is why I've written the Morgan County Probate Court regarding a record of their marriage sometime between 1844-1849. Have any of my fellow Morgan County researchers gotten a response when writing the Morgan County Probate Court? I live in California and would appreciate any help you can give me. Thanks in advance - Nancy Thompson (California)

    2. Melanie Sturgeon
    3. Hello, I am not familiar with the history of the Morgan County Courthouse and whether it actually burned down or not. However, I urge you to dig a little deeper when you are told that a courthouse has burned down. I am the Director of the Arizona State Archives and at least 20 or 30 times a year we get letters from patrons asking us how we can help them track down alternative sources of information to help them substitute for records destroyed in a fire in one or another of our county's courthouses. In truth, NONE of our county courthouses has burned down--nor were the records destroyed in a fire. Unfortunately, some county record keepers tell patrons this when they can't find the records. In our case, many of the records have actually been transferred to the State Archives. Others are simply stored off-site in a facility several miles from the courthouse. The point of this rather long explnation is: try to find documentation that a courthouse has burned--don't take someone's word for it. You might be pleasantly surprised, as a number of our patrons are. Melanie Sturgeon (archivist and researcher of Morgan County ancestors)

    3. In 1959 I worked for Cott Indexing Company, we Micro-filmed all the records for the Morgan County Court House, old records dating back to 1820, this is, I believe, when the court house was started. I do not know of any record of any fire. HOGWASH I think!
