My 2great grandfather, Ezra Camp Ray, was in Monroe Co from 1840 [according to the census] until 1849. My dad--in 1990--researched Monroe Co Land records, which show Ezra owning property in Monroe Co from 1842 to Apr 1846. Then he reappears in Washington Co, buying land there in Nov 1849. Does Monroe County have a buyer/seller index for land transactions for that period? [Maybe my dad missed one transaction?] Or perhaps a tax roll or voter roll that I could use to locate Him? {His wife, Alvira Selby Bloor, was from Belmont County.} **************Ideas to please picky eaters. If I give any mis-information here, hopefully someone will correct me: If I remember correctly, when I was in Woodsfield in December, the clerk at the Recorder's office told me that deeds were hit or miss from 1836 to 1840 and non-existant before 1836 due to a fire at the courthouse (the earlier of 2 fires). Sometimes these earlier deeds were re-recorded much later. She told me to check two particular volumes, as she had found several in them, but I can't remember now which ones they were. In my case, I didn't find any I was looking for in those volumes. It is also possible that your ancestor lived there, but did not own land until the 1842 purchase. You may want to compare the land descriptions from when he sold the land to when he purchased it to see if they are the same land. Tax duplicates are available for 1818-1838 (as well as all the deeds/indexes) on microfilm. If you are not close to Monroe County, your best bet is probably to order the film from your local family history center. A listing of the Monroe film is available here: http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library/fhlcatalog/supermainframeset.asp?display=localitydetails&subject=196526&subject_disp=Ohio%2C+Monroe&columns=*,0,0 I would assume that the tax records between 1838 and the time Ezra left in 1849 are available at the courthouse, but don't know that for sure. Can anyone confirm that? Chris Staats Danraydesc@aol.com wrote: My 2great grandfather, Ezra Camp Ray, was in Monroe Co from 1840 [according to the census] until 1849.
