A beautiful monument to Betty Zane is at the entrance. The Zane family graves are fenced. Zane, Elizabeth - heroine of Fort Henry -- the girl who saved the fort by carrying powder in her apron (no dates) Zane, John b 5/12/1806 d 8/2/1838 Zane, Nancy w/o John died 9/4/1895 age 90yrs Zane, Elizabeth (monument in front of cemetery --"whose heroic deed saved Fort Henry in 1782" Zane, John departed this live 19 Nov 1805 age 26y6m19d Zane, Ebenezer who died 19 Nov 1812 in the 66th yr of his age, he was the first permanent inhabitant of this part of the Western world having first begun to reside here in the year 1769? He died as he had lived an honest man. Zane, Elizabeth died Jan 17, 1814 in the 66th year of her age. He life was spent in the constant exercise of domestic and Christian virtue. Zane Family Records These are notes on the Zane family buried in Pioneer Cemetery The Hannah Martin, consort of Ebenezer Martin was a daughter of Betty Zane and her first husband, Mr. McLaughlin. She married 2nd a Mr. Clark Betty Zane (the heroine) was the sister of Ebenezer, Jonathan, Isaac, Silas and Andrew Zane Ebenezer Zane married Elizabeth McCullough. They had 13 children: 1. Catherine Zane m Capt Absolom Martin, Rev. Soldier of New Jersey. She was b 6/27/1769. They had Ebenezer Martin b 1191781 who married Hannah McLaughlin (A Capt. Absolom Martin in Guernsey Co in 1812 could be another son) 2. Ann Zane b May 27, 1771. died young 3. Sarah Zane b Feb 23, 1773 mar Capt. John McINtyre. He was a surveryor and in company with Jonathan Zane, brother of Ebenezer, laid out the town of Zanesville. Both he and his wife are well known in histotry of Zanesville and Muskingum Co., Oh 4. Noah Zane born Oct 1, 1774, died an infant 5. Rebecca Zane b Oct 19, 1776, married John Clark. It is probably her dau. Elizabeth, listed in the will of Elizabeth Zane. There was another dau. Sarah Jane Clark, who married Rev. Samuel Brockenier 6. Noah Zane b Oct 23, 1778, mar. Mary Chapline, dau of Moses & Mary Caldwell Chapline-lived in Wheeling 7. John Zane b Apr 30, 1780, said to have died young (Could be John in cemetery listed who d 11/19/1805) 8. Samuel Zane b May 12, 1782 died in infancy 9. Samuel Zane 2nd b Feb 12, 1784 10. Hetty Zane mar. Elijah Wood 11. Daniel Zane b Oct 25, 1788 died in infancy 12. Jesse Zane b Oct 5, 1790 died young 13. Daniel Zane, 2nd, b Aug 3 1792, m Cynthia Zane, dau of Jonathan Zane, who d 1841. He mar 2nd Angelina Tomlison Pease Twp Pioneers Conrad Long of Martin's Ferry, b Frankfort-on-the-Main, Germ. in Apr 1836. He came to U.S. in 1854 with an uncle and aunt and res in Va. Conrad here in 1856 and m in 1858 Kate Clark, dau of Eben. Clark, and gr-dau of Elizabeth Zane. Had 6 ch. M.E. Ch. members Daniel Z. McSwords of Martin's Ferry, a grandson of Archibald McSwords, native of N. Irelands who came to America during Rev. War with British troops, then settled in VA at Mooresfield, then to Brooke Co., W.Va then to Martins Ferry at home of son where he d in 1855. At Mooresfield he m in 1815 Miss Moore. Their only son Amon, b 1815. Amon m in 1837 Indiana Zane, dau of Daniel Zane and a relative of Elizabeth Zane. They had Orville, Alexis & Daniel. Daniel b 9/3/1840, m 1883 Laura Bamhill of Bellaire Ebenezer Martin founder of Martin's Ferry b 11/9/1791 site no of Benwood. He d 1/15/1876. He was son of Absalom Martin, native of N.J. a Rev. War soldier and a surveyor and d in 1800 on grant given him near site of Martin's Ferry. He m in 1789 Catherine Zane, dau of Ebenezer Zane and had 2 ch: a dau who d. y. and Ebenezer. Ebenezer went back to Princeton, N.J. for his education then came back and laid out town of Martinsville. He m 1st in 1809 to Hannah McLaughlin, dau of Betty Zane and had 9 ch. After Hannah's death he m in 1837 to Minerva Zane, dau of Isaac Zane and had 10 more ch. Dr. Simon West of Martin's Ferry, b Jefferson Co., Oh 1812, son of Henry & Mary Brown West. Dr. Simon m in 1838 Mary Zane Martin, dau of Ebenezer Martin and had 8 ch. Henry West a wealthy man. Daniel W. Clark b here 3/23/1833, son of Ebenezer Clark, son of Betty Zane. He m 1862 Mary J.
