Monroe Co., Oh Newspaper Abstracts Vol 3 cont'd TSD=The Spirit of Democracy TSD 6 Sept 1870 ...............................Old Monroe............................ There's little in thy rigged jo;;s. Or rocy dells or winding rills, That ever stranger bosom thrills. No iron way they valleys know, No wires where sleepless heraids flow, Nor yet the furnace's red glow. Trade comes not with her busy feet, And learning makes not this her seat, Nor art nor science their retreat. No precious ores in hill or dale, No palm or lime tree in the vale, No orange blossoms scents the gale. No ancient palace here is seen, No ruined fort or castle e'en, Nor scikening battle-field I ween. But there is not, on any soil, More honest, generous men of toil, Than these thy sons, unstained by spoil. In hope they ever plant the seed, In faith prepare for time of need, In charity the hungry feed. And pruer winds did never blow, Nor brighter waters evre flow, Than for the sons of Old Monroe. And though thy hills may rugged be, And strangers find no charm in thee, Thou ever hast a charm for me. August 1870 by J.W.O. TSD 27 Sept 1870 Married 16th inst. at St. Clairsville, A.C. Miller & Maggie Kennon d/o late Judge Kennon. TSD 4 Oct 1870 ...................Old Monroe # 2.................. Thou liest within the 'Buckeye' State, On the eastern border is they fate; Along thy shore flows a river fine, More beautious than the ancient Rhine; But e'er staid in this, thy pride should be, Thou art the home of true Democracy. Thy sons are noble, gallant men, As e'er held the plow or wield the pen; Their hearts are grieved at freedom's fall, But they'll bravely rally to the call. Their ensign bearing the resolution- 'We're fighting for the Constitution.' Thy memory shall be cherished far, When upon us dawns the morning star; When the thieves are put upon the chase And honest men fill every place- >From east to west, where'er you go, You'll hear them say, 'We're with old Monroe.' The shield of Democracy we'll wear And in our hands the old flag bear, And on the eleventh of October We'll vote toturn the over, And show the rogues houw they've blundered, By fully five and twenty hundred. by S.J.
