There was a Joseph L(eander) Smith in Monroe Co, but I've never seen "our" Joseph with the "L". He was born in VA, and some suggest his father may have been named Josiah {he may have been a Quaker}. This could be true, because he named his eldest son Josiah. No proof that I can find regarding Joseph's parents. He lived right on the line that separated Monroe and Noble Co's, land he bought in 1838. This was abt 4 hses from Ezra CURTIS, Amos' father, in 1850. Mary's father was James GARDNER, a chairmaker, bc 1785 MD or VA (he did live in VA for at least awhile), who supposedly came to Belmont Co in 1812, but def was there in 1818. A Joseph GARDNER bc 1779 in the area appears to be his brother. (they both named sons William, and Asberry dtrs Nancy, & Louisa). James d in Barnesville abt 1856. 2 of his dtrs married HARDESTY's from MD, one of which, Louisa lived with Joseph/Mary SMITH in 1880. You mentioned James Leroy and Kate being second cousins. Could you elaborate on that? Was she related to Willard Harrison CURTIS? I have no info on him. Also, do you know Herman's wife, Lua's maiden name? Were you born in IA, or did your father migrate elsewhere? Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
