Spirit of Democracy May 18, 1911 Sardis (deferred) The Sardis public school closed Friday after one of the most successful terms in its history. The commencement exercises were held in the auditorium of the M. Kaho One of the most enjoyable social affairs given here for some time, was the "at home" given Friday afternoon by Miss Erma Vetter at her home on Mound street. Pink and white predominated in the decorations and a profusion of cut flowers and ferns was used throughout the room, giving them a beautiful appearance. Place cards were painted by the hostess. Progressive flinch and crocinole were played, first premium being awarded to Miss Neva Gano of Wheeling and the consolation to Mrs. Anna Martin. After the games a course luncheon was served. Guests were: Mrs. Anna Martin, Mrs. C.E. Sole, Misses Adda Knight, Mae Harman, Marie Hisson, Ehtel Winland, Flore Frey, Margaret Dunn, Mable Rist and Neva Gano of Wheeling. W. T. Dally, Mrs. Laura Hofer, Mr. and Mrs. George A. Thompson and children, left Monday for Los Angeles where they will make their home. Mr. and Mrs. George Garrett, Mrs. John Woodcock and Miss Ida Ratcliffe of New Martinsville were guests of friends here Sunday. Mrs. W. F. Maloney and son William arrived Monday from Chicago for a two weeks visit with her mother and many friends. Mrs. A. C. Vetter is visiting relatives in Parkersburg and also attended the Sunday school convention held here last week. Mr. Paden took a crowd of about 40 up in the Katie Paden Tuesday evening to the Hannibal High school commencement. Don J. Martin arrive Sunday night from him home in Brookfield, Mo., for a few weeks visit among relatives. Miss Neva Gano of Wheeling came down from Wheeling Thursday evening for a few weeks visit with relatives. Mrs. Gordon Late of Bridgeport, W. Va., is visiting her parents Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Hissom above town. Robert Miller has returned to his home here after spending the winter with his daughter at Cleveland. Prof. H. G. Hesson of Belpre was a business caller in town Friday and Saturday. Prof. McMaster, president of Mt. Union college, was a caller here Wednesday. J. D. Nesbitt and sister Mrs. W. D. Webb spent Sunday at New Martinsville. Mrs. W. L. Knapp of Sistersville spent Sunday here with her parents. Mrs. Rose Rowles of Wheeling visited with friends at this place over Sunday. Charles Dennis and sister Miss Verna were callers in town Saturday. Mr. and Mrs. George W. Tubaugh were at New Martinsville Tuesday. Rev. J. D. Kaho preached the baccalaureate sermon Sunday evening. Mrs. S. V. Williamson visited in Parkersburg a few days last week. Mr. and Mrs. John Hess were Sunday visitors at Buckhill Bottom. Supt. J. V. Nelson was a business caller at Shadyside Saturday. Dr. S. C. Griffith was a professional caller at Wheeling Monday. J. H. Fraley of Goodwin was a business caller in town Saturday. Rev. J. D. Kaho of Hannibal called on friends in town Friday. Miss Adda Cline is home from a three weeks visit in Wheeling. Jerry Witten of Witten was a caller in town Sunday afternoon. Miss Mae Harman spent Saturday and Sunday in Marietta. C. R. Stalder was a business caller in Paden City Thursday. Harry Winland was down Sunday from New Martinsville. Miss Marie Tubaugh of Hannibal was in town Saturday. Miss Maude Ryne was a Wheeling visitor Monday. William Dunn transacted business in Wheeling Friday. Ray Nelson of Jerusalem is visiting his brother here.
