These articles are for the benefit of the genealogy community and should not be harvested and sold for anyone's profit Spirit of Democracy April 1, 1909 Sardis The Pythian Sisters gave an entertainment and banquet to the Sir Knights and their ladies Saturday evening in the K. of P. Hall. Addresses were made by Rev. Daniel Westfall of Sistersville, and Rev. W.S. Baker of Hannibal, Supt. J.V. Nelson and Rev. G.W. Robey of this place. Music by the Ladies' Quartet, a recitation by Miss Clara Suter and fancy drills by the degree staff composed the program. After refreshments and social hour every one retired to their homes feeling glad they had been there. Mrs. Sally Gills, an aged and respected lady passed away at the home of her daughter Mrs. Seph Sole Sunday evening at about seven o'clock, after a two week's illness. The remains will be taken to her old home at Wittens Tuesday afternoon and funeral take place Wednesday afternoon. Interment in Witten cemetery. {note in the previous paper she was "Gillis"--srk} Mrs. Ida Bowen will entertain at her home in New Martinsville Tuesday afternoon in honor of Miss Lucy Powell a returned missionary from Japan, Mrs. A. C. Vetter, Mrs. Dr. S.C. Griffith, Mrs. John C. Goodwin, Mrs. S. V. Williamson and Miss Maud Ryne from here are honored with invitations. Miss Lucile Griffith entertained the Musical Society, (organized a few months ago) Friday evening at her home on Mound street; dainty lunch was served. Eugene Thompson was home Saturday and Sunday from Lincoln county, W.Va., where he has been working in the oil fields. Miss Susan English and Reed McCormick of New Martinsville attended the banquet here Saturday given by the Pythian Sisters. Mrs. Edith Drollinger and daughter Rose returned Wednesday evening from a visit with relatives at Smithfield, W.Va. Miss Ella Thompson has secured a position in the office of H. Stanberry at Sistersville. Dr. S.C. Griffith returned Saturday evening from a few days business trip at Jerusalem. Mrs. Will Gautschie of New Matamoras was the guest of Mrs. George Paden Wednesday. H.C. Norris and two children are visiting at the home of George Norris and family. Mr. and Mrs. Sugfried of Cambridge are visiting their daughter Mrs. George Robey. Mrs. Wilse Martin and Miss Nellie Martin were shopping in Wheeling Wednesday. John L. Harmon spent Saturday evening and Sunday here with his parents. Rev. George W. Robey has moved into the Stewart property on Mound street. Miss Ethel Thompson is clerking in the store of W.L. Knapp at Sistersville. Miss Neva Gano of Wheeling is visiting her grand parents at this place. Mrs. Albert Rist was hostess to L.A.S.
