Woops! I forgot to "paste" the petition I mentioned in yesterday's posting. This was a petition of Pennsylvania government to provide protection against the murderous incursions of Indians from across the Ohio River in the Northwest Territory into the frontier settlements. I assume "Middle Wheeling" was Middle Wheeling Creek, flowing through Ohio Co, (W)VA and Washington Co, PA. HISTORICAL DOCUMENT "Memorial of Inhabitants of Middle Wheeling" Petition, 1792 As indicative of the feelings entertained by the settlers on the frontier in the year 1792, and their exposed and dangerous condition, we submit the following memorial of the inhabitants of Middle Wheeling, which is a copy of the original in its orthography and style. It is headed, Memorial of Inhabitants of Middle Wheeling ": - "We the inhabitants of middle Wheeling Now in a distressed and dangerous situation Have embodied ourselves and we are two weak to make a stand without assistance. We your humble petitioners do Pray your assistance in men, arms and ammunition, as we grudge William Craig to be the suitable place for the station, We flatter ourselves that you will do Everything that is in your Power, and humbly submits to your will In the fair; we your petitioners do pray.
