These articles are for the benefit of the genealogy community and should not be harvested and sold for anyone's profit Spirit of Democracy March 25, 1909 Sardis Miss Maude Ryne pleasantly entertained her girl friends Tuesday evening at her home on Main street in honor of Miss Ruth Case of Parkersburg and Miss Edith English who leaves the first of the week for her new home in Vineland, N.J. The hostess took advantage of the St. Patrick's day feature and made her affair of an interesting nature. The evening was whiled away with music and games, Miss English rendering some beautiful selections, and at a seasonable hour a delicious luncheon was served, which was carried out in green in a very clever manner. A very enjoyable time was spent by all. One of the most enjoyable affairs of the season was the "Masquerade" given Wednesday evening by the "Glee Club," in the K. of P. Hall. Games were played until a late hour when a dainty luncheon was served. Misses Edna Bowen and Mollie Wagner and Messrs. Harry Dilworth and Elwood Cowen of St. Marys, W.Va., spent Sunday here with Miss Bowen's parents Mr. and Mrs. T.E. Bowen. H. W. English and family left Monday for Vineland, N.J., where he has bought a fruit farm and will take possession at once. We are sorry to lose this family from our midst. Miss Ruth Case of Parkersburg returned home Saturday from a ten days visit here with her grandparents Mr. and Mrs. J.M.Goodwin. Mrs. Edith Drollinger and daughter Rose have returned home from a visit with relatives at Smithfield, W.Va. Miss Ethel Winland returned home Monday from a few days visit in Wheeling with her sister Mrs. Hal Hawkins. Harry Winland was down from New Martinsville Wednesday evening to take in the party at K. of P. hall. Miss Mary Ledget and Mant Rush attended the entertainment at the Theiss school house Friday evening. Mrs. Gillis is very ill at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Seph Sole, with no hopes of recovery. S. M. Lemmon of Wheeling was in town a few days last week with his daughter Mrs. Towle. Mr. and Mrs. John L. Harman and Master Gordon of Marietta spent Sunday here with his parents. John Jackson returned to his work at Marietta after a few days visit here with his family. Miss Clara Merckle of Clarksburg, W.Va., is the guest of her sister Mrs. William Niemann. Miss Della Smittle gave a party to a crowd of her young friends Wednesday evening. Mrs. Oliver Gossett attended the funeral of Miss Mary Rulong at Wheeling Saturday. Mrs. Carrie Neuenschwander of Hannibal is visiting at the home of Mrs. A.C. Vetter. Mrs. L.A. Witten of Wittens has been here the past week at the bedside of Mrs. Gillis. Mrs. E. W. Talbott spent Saturday and Sunday here with her sister Miss India Witten. Miss Erma Vetter left Saturday for a visit with relatives in St. Marys, W.Va. Miss India Witten spent Tuesday and Wednesday with friends at Wheeling. T. E. Bowen of Griffithsville, W.Va., is spending a short time here with his family. Dr. S.C. Griffith and wife were callers in Sistersville Thursday evening. Mr. and Mrs. A.E. Watters and Mrs. E.W. Litten were at Marietta Tuesday. Miss Nellie Martin spent Sunday with Miss Maggie Hedinger in the country. Miss Ella Thompson was shopping in New Martinsville Saturday afternoon. Mrs. J.W. Rush was hostess to the Ladies' Aid Society Thursday afternoon. Dr. S.C. Griffith was a business caller at New Martinsville Wednesday. Miss Ella Thompson entertained a few at Flinch Friday evening. H.E. Davenport of Friendly was a business caller here Saturday. The meeting at the Christian church closed Wednesday evening. Harold Goddard of Woodsfield was in town Saturday and Sunday. Samuel Suter of Sistersville was a caller in town Thursday. Miss Mary Kernen of Arville, W.Va., is visiting her aunt.
