Spirit of Democracy July 27, 1911 Sardis The following young people from here attended the picnic at Fraley's grove Saturday: Misses Elizabeth Garden, Marie Hissom, Hazel Bowen, Ethel Thompson, Silvia Smittle, Delia Smittle, Erma Vetter, Neva Gano, Ethel Winland, Golia Farmer, Hattie Thompson, Mrs. D.J. Martin, Clara Hess and Messrs. Charles Hess, Vaine Smittle, Albert Boetticher, Vernon Mercer, George Theiss, Martin Hissom, Henry Garden, Jerry Witten, Herbert Wolff, Webster Hissom, Lester Griffith and Roy Rist. The funeral of J.O.K. Hubbard was held Saturday in the M.E. Church at 2 p.m. Services were conducted by Rev. J.D. Kaho and interment in Sardis cemetery. Mrs. Will Cunningham and two children returned to their home in Wheeling Thursday from a pleasant visit at the home of her aunt Mrs. Oliver Gossett. J. A. White, general agent for the Union Central Life Insurance company spent Saturday and Sunday here at the home of Dr. S.C. Griffith. The funeral of Fritz Zeh took place Tuesday at 10 a.m. The services were conducted by Rev. J. M. Goddard of Woodsfield. Herbert Wolff returned to his home in Wheeling Sunday after spending his vacation here with his cousin Miss Erma Vetter. Miss Erma Vetter attended a fishing party at Rockport, Ohio, Thursday. Messrs. Roy Vetter and Herbert Wolff spent Thursday and Friday with Jerry Witten at his home in the country. Nile Ratcliffe, who has been guest at the Vetter home the past week has returned to his home in Wheeling. The Knights of Pythias will hold their annual picnic in the Nesbitt orchard below town Saturday, August 19. Prof. W. J. Gorrell spent Sunday at home from St. Mary, W.Va., where he is teaching a class in music. The Epworth and Junior leagues gave their annual picnic at Paden Park Tuesday afternoon and evening. Dr. R. W. Shayley and A.E. Watters returned Saturday from a week's trip through Canada. J.C. Williamson and bride of Wheeling were guests of relatives here Monday and Tuesday. George E. Hess of Avalon, Pa., spent Sunday here with his parents Mr. and Mrs. John Hess. Little Ruth Talbott of Sistersville has been visiting at the Nesbitt home the past few days. Miss Rebecca Hubbard of Wheeling Island is the guest of Miss Mabel Rist at this place. Dr. Will Paden of Parkersburg was the guest of his brother George E. here Sunday. Miss Esther Boger of Powhatan Point is visiting with Mrs. Charles Boetticher. Prof. H. G. Hesson of Belpre, Ohio, was a business caller here Wednesday. Mrs. John Hess left Sunday for a visit with her sister near Youngstown, Ohio. Dr. J. J. Richardson of Washington, D.C., spent Sunday here with relatives. George H. Cordell of Pittsburg spent Saturday and Sunday with friends here. Miss Maude Ryne is at Moundsville and Wheeling on a business mission. H.C. Powell of Parkersburg made a short call in town last week. Mrs. G.E. Paden and son Clyde were Wheeling visitors Tuesday. Mr. Jacob Mellott is visiting with relatives at Parkersburg. Prof. Ewart Pugh of Ozark was a caller in town last week.
