Spirit of Democracy October 19, 1911 Sardis (crowded out of last week) A party of 25 young people enjoyed a spread at the home of Miss Jennie Litten Saturday evening, it being Miss Litten's twentieth birthday. She was the recipient of some beautiful presents. Games were indulged in until a late hour when all went to the dining room to enjoy the feast that had been prepared by the fair sex. A meeting was held at the school house Wednesday evening for the purpose of organizing an Alumni Association. Miss Hattie Thompson was elected president, Miss Ethel Winland, Secretary and Evert Busch, treasurer. Walter Stewart of this place and Miss Tillie Lohr of Trail Run were married at the home of the bride Monday evening and left the following day for their future home in Akron. Mrs. W. D. Webb, Mrs. Geo. H. Martin and Miss Evelyn Nesbitt attended a card party at Sistersville Thursday afternoon given by Mrs. E. W. Talbott. The Ladies' Aid Society celebrated the seventy first birthday anniversary of Mrs. Nancy Goodwin Wednesday afternoon at her home on Mound street. Melvin J. Paden, jr., left Friday morning for his school work in Louisville, Ky., after a months visit with relatives here and at New Martinsville. Mrs. Lizzie Gatts returned to her home at Captina, W. Va., after spending a few days here with her parents. Robert Anderson left Tuesday for his home in Otway, Ohio after a week spent here with his brother Lee. Charles E. Dennis left Thursday to attend the annual meeting of the state board of charities at Toledo. Misses Ethel Thompson and Clara Hess were shopping in New Martinsville Saturday. Miss Dora Enoch of Madison, Kansas, is visiting her many friends in this community. Miss Mary Bowen of New Martinsville spent Tuesday here with Miss Maude Ryne. Mrs. C. E. Sole returned home Wednesday evening from a ten days visit at Fernwood. Misses Flora Frey and Lucille Griffith returned Sunday from a short visit at Hannibal. Miss Hazel Bowen left Saturday for Marietta where she will enter Marietta college. Charles A. Myers and wife are moving into the Goodwin property on Fifth avenue. Mrs. Morris Huffman and little daughter Evelyn are absent on a visit at Pittsburg. Mrs. O'Neill and daughter Florence of Hannibal were in town Tuesday. Carl Denbow spent Saturday and Sunday with his parents at Woodsfield. G. L. Titus of Huntington, W. Va., was a business caller here Tuesday. Miss Erma Vetter was shopping in Sistersville Thursday afternoon. Rev. G. W. Eagon moved his family to Pursley, W.Va., last week. Mrs. Mary Moore of Huntington, W.Va., visited in town last week.
