Spirit of Democracy March 11, 1909 Sardis The Ladies' Aid Society was entertained by Mrs. Harry Ratcliffe Thursday afternoon at her home on Mound Street. Mrs. John Drollinger left Saturday for a three weeks visit with her sister Mrs. Mary Lowe at Smithfield, W. Va. Harry English, George Martin, Charles Sole, and Frank Renshaw are at home from their work in the oil fields. L.M. Anderson has rented the Godfrey Bauman farm above town, and will take possession in the near future. Harry Theiss, who has employment at Steubenville is visiting his parents Mr. and Mrs. John Theiss near town. Mrs. Jacob Schaffer has returned from a weeks visit with her daughter Mrs. C.K. Cane at Wheeling. Mrs. Lizzie Gatts of Moundsville spent a few days here last week with her mother Mrs. P. Cunningham. Mrs. Dr. S. C. Griffith has returned from a few days visit with relatives at Shadyside and Jerusalem. Miss Clara Suter was at New Martinsville Saturday and Sunday at her sisters Mrs. George L. Gorby. Rev. Devore of Beallsville begun a two weeks meeting here at the Christian church Saturday evening. Mrs. W. T. Webb was called to Parkersburg on account of the illness of her sister Mrs. W. D. Moore. Mrs. J. R. Hissom and daughter Mrs. Gordon Late are spending a few days here with relatives. Miss Lou Wiley of Wheeling is spending a few days at the home of her aunt Mrs. D. S.C. Griffith. Mr. and Mrs. E. W. Gano of Wheeling arrived Saturday evening for a visit with relatives here. Miss India Witten has returned from a month's visit with her sister at Huntington, W.Va. Miss Mae Harman spent Saturday and Sunday at Marietta with her brother and family. Several Knights of Pythias attended lodge at New Martinsville Wednesday evening. Webster Witten of Wheeling is spending a few days here at their farm above town. Miss Blanche Towle and Salena Nelson were shopping in Sistersville Friday afternoon. Morris Huffman of Steamer Ohio, is spending a short time here with friends. Miss Eva Martin left Saturday morning to visit her mother at Clarington. Mrs. W.L. Knapp and children of Sistersville were in town Thursday. Mr. and Mrs. W.E. Romick were callers at Wheeling Monday. Miss Elizabeth Gardner was shopping in Sistersville Thursday.
