Oh Queries A new message, "Monroe County Ancestors," was posted by Jan O'Brien on Sun, 02 Jan 2000 Surname: BROWN, QUIGLEY, DEMENT, STARKEY, McCOY, HARLAN, HOBBS, SHOTWELL, OLIVER --- NAME: Jan O'Brien EMAIL: TWHROSE@aol.com DATE: Jan 02 2000 LINK: Brown Web Page URL: http://Brown-L@Rootsweb.com QRYTEXT: This Brown family of Josias Brown, b. 1744, Revolutionary War soldier, served in Col. Peebles company, Cumberland PA. buried in Ogleby Park, West Virginia, grave marked by the DAR, married to Hanna Mitchell also buried by her husband. Believe his first wife was Mary Hervey, unable to confirm. Josias son, Alexnder is my ancestor, by his son John and Matilda Brown,(nee Ferrel)(1) Henry Drum. John Brown's first wife was Sarah Allen and their first daughter, Isabella was a half sister to John. Isabella was Catherine Fedorchak's ancestor. I was in Monroe County and Wheeling in October, 99 and was able to copy many pages at the library in Woodsfield. Josias's will, at Wheeling listed son, Elijah as the administrator of his estate. I would be interested in any information from the family of Elijah or other lines that might take us further back. I have also had information from William Wilson Brown's family, a brother of Alexander Brown. Alexander Brown, buried in Eggar Ridge Cemetery, Monroe County, was possibly married to a Dorcus Dement, unable to confirm, however several times the names has appeared, Dorcus Brown, also buried at Eggar Ridge. John Brown died, Matilda sold their property to Isabella Brown Hawkins, her step daughter, and bought 20 acres in Monroe County. She sold the land in 1865 and "moved west". We find her with sons Josiah and Albert on the 1870 census in Kansas. John & Matilda Brown had 4 sons, Josiah, b. 1849/50, Lewis H., David and Albert Franklin Brown. Josiah is my grandfather, and I have found the familes of Lewis & Albert. I believe that David may have married Adaline Starky and stayed in Ohio. Matilda also had a son Alexander Drum who also came to Kansas. I am also looking for comfirmation of where Matilda is buried. She may have stayed in Kansas or I found a marriage of a Matilda Brown and a Peter Weber in 1881 in a book at the library in woodsfield. Did not have time to check the age of this Matilda, who would have been in late 60 or so when I was in Ohio. Josiah b. 1850, married Sarah A.Hobbs, 1880 in Monroe County, daughter of John F. Hobbs and Marion Hobbs, Belmont County nee Shotwell, and sister to Judge Thadius Hobbs, Fly, Ohio and Susan Hobbs who married a James Meredith and were in Ohio at the time of Sadie's death in 1935. Lewis H. Brown, brother to Josiah married Josephine Hobbs, sister to Sadie, in 1876. Albert Franklin Brown married Sarah Ross in Kansas. Josiah Harlan Brown, Sr., b. 1850, was a butcher in Severy, and later a builder in Chanute Kansas. He and his wife are buried in Twin Grove Cemetery, Severy, Kansas, just East of Wichita. The house is still standing in Severy, KS, that my father, Josiah Harlan Brown, Jr. was born in 1887. The Josiah Brown, Sr.'s also had two children who died during an epedimic in Kansas, William Oliver Brown, and J. Franklin Brown. Going back from Josias, according to Catherine's reserarch, Josias father was a Samuel Brown, wife, Hannah Rundall, of Cumberland county, PA and in other of her articles, an interview with a Brown said the the first of our line was a Clement Brown. Do not know any port of entry for a Clement Brown, might look in the Carolinas. To sumarize, I would like to find the following information to continue on: Brown families connected to this family especially other children of Josias, b. 1744 Dement relating to a marriage to Alexander Brown Starkey possible marriage to David Brown If Matilda Brown was married to Peter Weber in 1881 The spelling change from Josias, b. 1744 to Josiah, b 1850 is correct, not a typo. Dr. Silas Harlan grandaughter married into the Brown Family in Kansas. For my grandfather to have been named Harlan in 1850, there had to be an earlier connection. I am looking for it. My father, grandfather, myself, my son and brother all carry the Harlan name as our middle name. . This is an automatically-generated notice. <http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Oh/Monroe>
