A few days ago there was a question about whether the State of Ohio required a woman to be married in the county in which her father resided. Judging from a marriage affidavit I have, I guess the answer is yes, at least in 1874, and if she was still living with her parents. It reads: THE STATE OF OHIO Monroe County, ss, Mr. McNiece, having made application for a LICENSE, for himself and Eliza Smith, and being duly sworn, says that he is of the age of twenty-one years, and has no wife living, and that Eliza Smith is of the age of eighteen years, a resident of said County, and has no husband living, and that said parties are not nearer kin than second cousins, and are both of the same color. William McNiece Sworn to and Subscribed before me this 20th day of March A.D. 1874 (looks like) Jas R. Morris It's interesting that the husband-to-be did all the swearing and signing; Eliza Smith's signature doesn't appear anywhere. Betsy
