    3. Spirit of Democracy January 9, 1896 Sardis On New Years eve quite a crowd of young folks gathered at the home of Mr. Louis Windland, in honor of his charming daughters, Emma and Alma. Mr. Turner is having a fine dwelling put up on Mound street, which will be an improvement to our city. Mr. Messerly, the tailor from Clarington, and Mr. Hornbrook of New Martinsville, were here Friday. Miss Kate Romick and Miss Emma Stoehr were at New Martinsville Wednesday. Mr. and Mrs. Hofer of Baresville were the guests of their son Samuel, New Years. The Virginia passed up last night. It is one of the finest boats on the river. Mr. Charles Tightess left for his home in Tightesville, last week. The show given at the hall by Mr. Russel was well attended.
