    3. Spirit of Democracy February 28, 1895 Sardis Very interesting exercises were held in Miss Adda Knight's room on Thursday afternoon, concerning the life of the "Father of Our Country." The literary part of the program reflected great credit on both teacher and scholars. Prof. Walton gave us a good address on the beauty of the character of Washington. The Aeriel Sextette furnished the music, which was by no means the least part of the entertainment. The oil fever is getting pretty high and if there is any oil found in the Nesbitt well, which is now being tested, it will soon reach "blood heat." There has been quite a good deal of leasing in the neighborhood lately. Sardis has some lovely building sites and persons desiring to make homes for themselves will do well to investigate our advantages as regards healthfulness, excellent water, gas, and good moral people. Tom Hess has sold his property to Peter Gilman and has bought a lot in the Bridgeman addition, where he is erecting a new dwelling. Sardis now boasts of a string band "The Aeriel Sextette." Their music is quite a treat to the lovers of the same. A great quantity of ice is being taken from the river and stored. It is said to be of very fine quality, too. Our schools were closed Friday in honor of the wonderful "George," who could tell a lie but would not. Since the "backbone" of winter is broken , Sardis has taken on a little more activity. The new store room of A.C. Vetter is almost completed and is quite a nice building. Mrs. A.C. Vetter and daughter Emma are visiting at St. Marys, W.Va. Dr. Haudenschield is going to build in the Nesbitt addition. Miss Dora Nesbitt spent Sabbath with friends in Sistersville. We hear of several new houses to be built this spring. Prof. Walton spent a few days at his home last week. Quarterly meeting at Mt. Moriah last Sabbath. transcribed by Sara Richardson Kelly re: Richardson, Suter, Griffith, Nesbitt, Deiter
