    1. Re: OHMONROE-Surnames of Monroe Co.
    2. I started to hit the big D button when it dawned on me that Sardis was a town w/ rang a bell. My Mother, Lela GREEN, d/o of James Franklin and Nora ORANGE GREEN lived there for some short period of time in her childhood. For the life of me, I could not tell you when but I might be able to pinpoint the dates through her brother, Harlan GREEN who just celebrated his 97th birthday. He is in Flint, MI but I remain in close touch w his children. I seem to remember Mother talking about going to grade school there but I am not certain. She was born in Graysville and of course I remember Woodsfield being discussed. My grandmother ORANGE, Mary Ellen WINLAND ORANGE was the only person in Monroe Co whom I remember at all. Vague memories of early family reunions at her house and her funeral are about the only real memories I have. I remember Hartzorne Ridge being mentioned and I know that the NICHLSONS owned a small grocery story on the T road at the end of Grandmother Orange's road but I have no idea of the name of her road. I just remember older girl cousins whose legs were longer than mine taking me down the road, up a little hill and turning left to the store where we bought a treat. Mother later told me the store was originally owned by the NICHOLSONS and BATTENS. The oldest GREEN daughter married a BATTEN. She was my great aunt Minnie, oldest daughter to Thomas Franklin GREEN and his wife Nancy Ellen NICHOLSON who died shortly after her eleventh child whom she had at the age of 38. Minnie stayed home and helped her father raise the large family even after she married BATTEN and had her own family. Any of this ring any bells w Monore natives? I haven't been in the county for a long time but I remember quite a bit about it and discussed it w/ my Mother till she died in 1999 She loved to talk about her days of living in Monroe Co. Her dad, James, worked in the oil fields and went to TX to help bring in early wells there. They moved to Ranger, TX for a short period of time but came back to the Bremen area. His brother George worked in the oil field industry also., Marjory PETTY Austen, daughter of Alva PETTY, Perry Co. and Lela GREEN, Bremen .OH.
