    3. Spirit of Democracy July 18, 1895 Sardis The storm Monday evening was quite a scare, especially to those that took a buggy ride up the road, and go caught in it, but we were very thankful for the rain. This year apples are so plentiful that we bite a dozen before we get one to suit us; last year we would have been glad for any kind. Mrs. Jesse Davis and two charming little daughters of Woodland, W.Va. are guests of her parents. Mr. Deiter is having a fine residence built, which will be an improvement to our city. We are glad to say that the river has raised, and some of the large boats are out again. Born, to Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Hall, a bouncing baby boy. Sammy is so very proud. Ed Fry has some very nice watermelons. Girls, do the boys know it? George Soals moved his family in the Thompson house this week. Samuel Hofer is having a fine fence put around his residence. Mrs. James Watson and children of Parkersburg are here again. Judge Driggs of Bridgeport was here a few days this week. Will Stoeher was at New Matamoras one day last week. Mrs. Jennie Walton was visiting friends here this week. Louis Stoehr was at Sistersville Thursday on business. Fritz Drolinger was here Sunday. transcribed by Sara Richardson Kelly re: Richardson, Suter, Griffith, Nesbitt, Deiter
