I believe my great great Grandmother Mary Hemphill, born in Ireland in 1772 was related to Washington Co, PA, Hemphills, but I have not been able to make a connection with anyone. Mary [Hemphill] married John Steel and lived most of their lives in Dunkard Twp of Greene Co, PA, but was recorded in 1810 as living in Buffalo Twp of Washington Co, PA. However, I looked in the 1850 and 1860 Censuses for Monroe Co, OH-There was no Noble Co, OH until 1851-to see if we can find some clues to your John Steel. There were no Hemphills in the county, but plenty of Steels. So here they are for your consideration. File it away; it may come in handy someday. I do know there is some biographical material on Samuel Steel. I believe he was appointed executor of the Estate of _____ Gray, the founder of Graysville. Also on my Monroe Co, OH, wall map is a stick-um note, "William Steel, US Govt. Land Entry, 1817, R4 T2 S3, Guernsey Co, OH, Deed Book, Recorded Patent Deed Book U, p. 17."
