    1. [OHMONROE] Belmont Ohio - Monroe Ohio Genealogy Question For Research
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: ce2128 Surnames: Classification: lookup Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.ohio.counties.monroe/2290/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Ancestry is similar to the LDS Ancestral files. No sort of proof or documentation is required to 'prove' the lines submitted. So, we must treat all undocumented information as clues ONLY, to be proved or disproved with our own research...that is, with primary records such as birth, death, baptismal, marriage, church, tax, census, etc....this sort of record, while certainly not without error, is the best we have, and necessary for something to be accepted as fact. (a secondary resource isn't sufficient...that is, a person/date, etc found in a biography, county history, etc.....only an actual record of an event is primary. If you find a secondary resource, then you must find primary documentation, proving the event.) In earlier times, family names were very important to a new parent........many wished to have, for instance, a daughter named after a grandmother....when little Mary #1 died, in infancy, the next baby girl might also be named Mary. The important thing was not that the name had already been 'given' to a baby, but for there was a child named for Mother. This was a not uncommon occurrence in the 1700s....I had a family that actually had 3 infant girls given the same name. I believe there are at least two seperate clans of Hawkins in Monroe. I am descended from Samual Hawkins 1822 to 1856/ Elizabeth Sill, John L. Hawkins 1847-1921/Martha Wilson, J.Brade Hawkins/Ora Denbow. Sam Hawkins appears to have come from PA to Monroe County, but because of his young age at death I have found little info. about him. I find one reference that Sam Hawkins is the son of Thomas Hawkins/ Mary Moser of PA and later of Columbiana Co. Ohio. Sam and his family appear to have been missed in the 1850 census. I would love to connect with any other descendents. Thanks, Todd Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 1. [OHMONROE] Amelia Barnes
    2. I am working with the Starkey family in Monroe Co., Ohio and I found an Amelia Barnes, daughter of Dorsey applied for a marriage license in Belmont Co to wed David Starkey. There was no return so I don't know if they wed or not. They applied for the license in April 1825 and the oldest child in this family I cite following had their first child abt 1827. But I find in 1850 in Meigs Co a Permela Starkey, age 49, DAvid 18, Marinda 13, Westley 10, Emily 7 and a Watson STarkey 23 and his family, Malinda 22, William 2, & Wilson 21. There are other Starkey families in Meigs Co., but I wonder since she named a son David if this is the same person? Does anything know what happened to Amelia Barnes and who might her parents be. Hope someone can clear this up for me. Thanks. Jerilyn ************************************** See what's new at http://www.aol.com

Obviously, West Virginia did not exist as a state at the time period I was looking for, so perhaps Joseph from Virginia was the same person. I would like as much info as is available for the Smith and Gardner families to add to my notes, if it is convenient for you -- thanks. I have no idea at this time who Willard Harrison Curtis was -- perhaps he's in my notes -- but Kate was the daughter of Nelson Curtis and Mary Ann Freeman. Nelson was the son of Eli Curtis, brother to Ezra, which makes Kate and James LeRoy second cousins (assuming the material I have been given is correct!). Herman's wife was Lua Frances Cummings, daughter of James Francis Cummings and Alice Mabel Hollister. My father (LeRoy Franklin Curtis) was named for both his grandfathers through the use of their middle names, but the family thought James Francis was James Franklin because he went by the name of Frank. My father joined the navy after finishing high school in Quimby, Iowa, and while he was stationed in the Norfolk, VA area met and married my mother, whose father (from northeastern NC) was in that area with the coast guard. I was born in the Naval Hospital in Portsmouth, VA, but my brother was born in Iowa because we lived there during WWII. Please let me know whatever else I can help you with -- it's the least I can do. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. There was a Joseph L(eander) Smith in Monroe Co, but I've never seen "our" Joseph with the "L". He was born in VA, and some suggest his father may have been named Josiah {he may have been a Quaker}. This could be true, because he named his eldest son Josiah. No proof that I can find regarding Joseph's parents. He lived right on the line that separated Monroe and Noble Co's, land he bought in 1838. This was abt 4 hses from Ezra CURTIS, Amos' father, in 1850. Mary's father was James GARDNER, a chairmaker, bc 1785 MD or VA (he did live in VA for at least awhile), who supposedly came to Belmont Co in 1812, but def was there in 1818. A Joseph GARDNER bc 1779 in the area appears to be his brother. (they both named sons William, and Asberry dtrs Nancy, & Louisa). James d in Barnesville abt 1856. 2 of his dtrs married HARDESTY's from MD, one of which, Louisa lived with Joseph/Mary SMITH in 1880. You mentioned James Leroy and Kate being second cousins. Could you elaborate on that? Was she related to Willard Harrison CURTIS? I have no info on him. Also, do you know Herman's wife, Lua's maiden name? Of Amos/Mary's 12 children, 10 had families of their own, and I have at least a little on each of them. Which branch do you think you connect to? I'd appreciate information from you and your family back to where you think you connect, and we'll go from there. Amos and Mary both were born and died in the part of Monroe Co. that butts up against Noble Co. They, several of their children and Mary's parents are all buried at Mt Tabor Cemetery, right over the Noble County line. The CURTIS family is well documented from Ohio back to Puritan beginnings in Roxbury, MA and farther back to Nazeing England in the early 1500's. It also connects back to Mayflower passengers on the distaff side. Let me know if there is specific information you're seeking and I'll try to get that to you first.
